Second-round matches

Poland v Russia (Group I)

Tip-off: 16:00 local time (GMT+8)
Head to head odds: Poland $2.18, Russia $1.69
Venue: Foshan International Sports & Cultural Arena
Poland v Russia predictions: Undefeated Poland face a searching test here against the Russians, who came through with a 2-1 record and were only beaten by Argentina 69-61. While neither team is expected to contend for the title, Poland could go a long way towards a quarter-final berth with a win here. Shooting guard Mateusz Ponitka has been a standout for Poland and he knows plenty about how Russia operate as he plies his trade in that country for Zenit Saint Petersburg. Our tip here is Poland to win a close one but try either team by less than 7 points at around $2.15.

Serbia v Puerto Rico (Group J)

Tip-off: 16:30 local time (GMT+8)
Head to head odds: Serbia $tbc, Puerto Rico $tbc
Venue: Wuhan Sports Centre
Serbia v Puerto Rico predictions: No surprise here that we expect Serbia to continue on their march towards an inevitable medal. They have been superb so far, shooting the lights out at will. They have scored more points than any other team to date, and also have the leading individual scorer in guard Bogdan Bogdanovic who is averaging 24 points a game with a phenomenal shooting percentage from three-point range of 65.2. Puerto Rico have done well to reach the second round but they look outmatched here and we expect Serbia to cover the handicap line.

Argentina v Venezuela (Group I)

Tip-off: 20:00 local time (GMT+8)
Head to head odds: Argentina $1.13, Venezuela $6.20
Venue: Foshan International Sports & Cultural Arena
Argentina v Venezuela predictions: Argentina head into this match undefeated and flying under the radar a little as far as contenders go. Meanwhile, Venezuela made it through despite being easily outpointed by Poland in a first-round match. It was a little concerning that the first time they were placed under great pressure they could not lift but there has not been a lot between Argentina and Venezuela over the years. We expect a tough contest with scoring a little difficult so therefore we like the under 155.5 points at around $1.90 in this match.

Spain v Italy (Group J)

Tip-off: 20:30 local time (GMT+8)
Head to head odds: Spain $1.35, Italy $3.25
Venue: Wuhan Sports Centre
Spain v Italy predictions: This should be a compelling contest given Spain were flawless through their opening three matches, while Italy’s only defeat came against the powerful Serbian side and they stuck in there gamely in that match. But Spain are well in commission with sportsbooks to be there in the medal round and it’s time for them to step up. A win here would almost certainly book them in for a quarter-final spot. We think Spain can cover the -6.5-handicap at odds of $1.94.

Positions 17-32 classification matches

Nigeria v Ivory Coast (Group M)

Tip-off: 16:00 local time (GMT+8)
Head to head odds: Nigeria $1.06, Ivory Coast $11
Venue: Guangzhou Gymnasium
Nigeria v Ivory Coast predictions: We expect Nigeria to be too strong in this one. They were far more impressive than their African counterparts in the opening round. Ivory Coast are winless to date but the results from the African qualifying clashes should sound a small note of caution. Nigeria won 84-73 against Ivory Coast in Lagos late last year, but in February a second-string Nigerian team was crushed 46-72 in Abidjan. We expect the top-notch Nigeria this time but will stay away from the handicap betting which has Nigeria conceding 16.5 points.

Angola v Iran (Group N)

Tip-off: 16:00 local time (GMT+8)
Head to head odds: Angola $2.98, Iran $1.40
Venue: Wukesong Sport Arena, Beijing
Angola v Iran predictions: Iran go into this match winless while Angola scrapped out a win over the Philippines but we still think Iran have a distinct edge in this contest. We are tipping Iran will cover the 5.5-point line in this one at $1.88.

China v Korea (Group M)

Tip-off: 20:00 local time (GMT+8)
Head to head odds: China $1.25, Korea $4
Venue: Guangzhou Gymnasium
China v Korea predictions: The home team’s dreams of advancing into the next round were dashed by the narrow loss against Poland and then they were disappointing against Venezuela, but they will be keen to finish this championship on a high note and add to their win against the Ivory Coast. They should be especially dominant on the boards, going on the previous displays by Korea. We think China can cover the 9.5-point spread fairly comfortably and bookies should be offering around $1.91 for this result.

Tunisia v Philippines (Group N)

Tip-off: 20:00 local time (GMT+8)
Head to head odds: Tunisia $1.24, Philippines $4.10
Venue: Wukesong Sport Arena, Beijing
Tunisia v Philippines predictions: Tunisia showed in their most recent match against Puerto Rico, a 67-64 loss, that they are competitive up to a point. Their rivals in this also lifted on Wednesday in a 84-81 loss to Angola and will possibly see this as their best chance of going home with at least one win. We can see an absorbing scrap developing and will have a small wager on the Filipinos +9.5 points at around $1.95.
