Gosford Gold Cup preview & Randwick tips, Saturday, May 9, 2020

Melbourne Cup 2020 Flemington

Welcome to our Gosford Gold Cup preview and Randwick racing tips for Saturday, May 9, 2020.

The Gosford Gold Cup meeting has been relocated to Randwick this year, because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic that has struck down most major sports, but has seen racing continue around Australia.

The $200,000 Listed Gosford Gold Cup (2000m) will feature last year’s Sydney Cup winner Shraaoh and Wagga Cup victor House Of Cartier, with the pair priced at $41 and $10 respectively with Unibet.

The bookies’ favourite for the Gosford Gold Cup is Greysful Glamour ($4) with the four-year-old set to carry 55kg with Rachel King on board for trainer Mark Newnham. Others fancied in the betting include Bottega and Best Of Days (both $6.50 with Unibet)

The nine-race card also includes the listed $120,000 Takeover Target Stakes (1200m) with the Hawkes family-trained Greyworm the $3.10 favourite to win its second black type race in as many starts, after winning the Group 3 Hall Mark Stakes at Randwick on April 18.

Read on for our free Gosford Gold Cup tip and our preview of the nine-race card at Randwick, being run on May 9, 2020.

Randwick race 7, Gosford Gold Cup, 3.20pm local time (2000m)

6. Greysful Glamour is drawn wide in gate 12 but there is little doubt Rachel King will push the button early and take the bonny mare to the lead. She should get things here own way in front, though it must be remembered the Randwick 2000m is a taxing trip. Greysful Glamour has won over this distance before but she has not won in seven previous runs at Randwick. She should give a great sight but it could get a little hairy in the last 200m. Topweight 1.Yulong Prince is a well-travelled galloper having started his career in South Africa before winding up in the Chris Waller Stable. He ran well in the Doncaster Handicap before being slightly disappointing at this track and distance last time. He will get back in the field and needs a strong tempo set to allow him to get into the race in the straight. 17.Bottega should push forward from a wide gate and he is a lightly raced Snitzel colt going places. He could get the right trail behind Greysful Glamour, especially if the likes of White Boots inject some speed into the race.

Our tip: Bottega will do for us at about $6.50 with Unibet. He is from the astute Gerald Ryan stable and has the services of in-form jockey Brenton Avdulla.

Randwick race 8, Takeover Target Stakes, 4pm local time (1200m)

What a wonderful sprinter Takeover Target was, taking his trainer Joe Janiak, a part-time taxi driver, to victory at Royal Ascot and winning 21 of his 41 starts. There are no horses likely to repeat his heroics in this year’s edition the race named in his honour but that does not mean we can’t find a winner at a good price. Godolphin sprinter 2.Deprive has raced without much luck this campaign and just two starts back was fourth in a star-studded Group 1 race. He needs luck because of his racing pattern but in this smallish field and with a few speedsters engaged he should get his chance. Deprive has a devastating turn of foot on his day and loves this track and distance. 3.Greyworm is the early favourite and is a model of consistency. If he gets his own way in front it’s all over but we suspect the likes of 8.Snitz and 9.Murillo will keep him honest.

Our tip: We are very confident about the chances of Deprive in this race. We are happy to take the $5 now on offer with Unibet as he looks like getting a race run perfectly to suit and has a champion jockey in James McDonald on board. Watch him hit the line!
