England played superbly in the first Test, with the real difference between the teams the magnificent double century by Joe Root, who has put together an astonishing run of form against Sri Lanka and now India.

England were, of course, fortunate to win the toss and bat first on a pitch which deteriorated rapidly in the final two days. The toss will again be crucial though the pitch, a different strip from the first Test, is expected to turn from the first day this time around.

England have been forced into wholesale changes with paceman Jofra Archer ruled out of at least this Test with an elbow injury. Paceman James Anderson, who produced a brilliant spell on the final day of the first Test is also out of the team, with fellow veteran Stuart Broad coming in. Olly Stone or Chris Woakes is expected to come in for Archer.

Meanwhile, wicketkeeper Jos Buttler has headed home England, with Ben Foakes his replacement, while spinner Moeen Ali also comes in in place of Dom Bess.

India have spinner Axar Patel available again, while the big danger man for India is tipped to be Ravi Ashwin, who was so difficult to play in the first Test.

India need to pick up their batting but the admission of a crowd of 50 per cent capacity is sure to spur on the home team after no spectators were permitted at the opening Test.

India v England betting tips

Our cricket tipsters have examined the odds and found several India v England tips for the second Test.

Virat Kohli man of the match at $7

Kohli is one of the world’s great batsman. For that matter so is Joe Root, but we liked what we saw in the India second innings with Kohli really starting to find his form. Root will carry a lot of his side’s hopes but we expect India to prove too strong this time with all the changes to the England team, and Kohli to lead the charge with a first-innings 100.

Moeen  Ali most wickets for England 1st innings

Moeen will be desperate to do well after missing out on the first Test and should find conditions to suit this time. Jack Leach is the favourite in betting but the Indians will treat him warily after seeing what he can do. Moeen is the man to get under their guard.

India v England prediction 13/2/2021

This looms as a wonderful contest again. England have won six consecutive matches on the subcontinent but they have really had to mix it up for this match which could have an unsettling effect. The toss is all-important but either way we expect India to level the series. Our final India v England prediction? India by 150 runs/five wickets.
