Can Leipzig keep their Champions League run alive?

It is only the second time the Red Bulls of Germany have taken part in the UEFA Champions League. One could argue they had an easy group since they played against Zenit, Lyon, and Benfica. However, that group now has two teams through to the semi-finals, which indicates otherwise.

Leipzig have won seven of their eight previous knockout ties in European competitions. The highlight was a great round of 16 win against Tottenham Hotspurs, and they also played a great match in the quarter-final against Atletico Madrid. Thanks to Daniel Olmo and Tyler Adams, the German team defeated the favorites 2-1. Nobody might have expected Leipzig in the semi-finals, but they certainly deserve it.

PSG crushed Atalanta’s dreams

It seemed like a fairytale for Atalanta in the quarter-final match against Paris. They had the advantage with only minutes until the final whistle.

But it turned into a nightmare in the 90th minute when PSG star Marquinhos scored, and Choupo-Moting sealed Atalanta’s fate two minutes later. In one of the biggest turnarounds this season, PSG won 2-1 and qualified for the semi-final.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the French Ligue 1 season was cancelled, and Paris did not play an official game in months. They have not been great in matches since the break. PSG might have won the French Cup (1-0 against Saint-Etienne) and the League Cup (0-0 against Lyon, won on penalties), but they played below all expectations.

It remains to be seen whether they can use the late turnaround against Atalanta as a confidence boost.

Team news and injuries

Not only has Timo Werner left Leipzig to join Chelsea, but the German team can’t use its new signings Benjamin Henrichs and Hwang Hee-Chan in the Champions League. On top of this, hip surgery has sidelined Ibrahima Konate, which is why Leipzig’s defence might be more vulnerable than usual.

Paris SG can count on Angel di Maria following a suspension, and Thiago Silva has a minor hamstring injury but he will play. Kylian Mbappe is still recovering from an ankle sprain, but we are tipping we will see him in the starting line-up on Tuesday. Keylor Navas is questionable after being substituted in the quarter-final, and we probably won’t see Marco Veratti and Layvin Kurzawa due to injuries.

Paris v Leipzig tips

Our football betting expert has taken a look at the PSG v Leipzig betting and come up with some free tips.

Both teams to score at least one goal

Leipzig might not have Werner any more, but they still know how to score with the German team scoring two or more goals in six of their past seven UCL matches.

When it comes to Paris Saint Germain, there is a long list of players capable of hitting the net – Icardi, Neymar and Mbappe among the most dangerous players in the world. With a high-quality side like PSG, we don’t see a way they don’t hit the net at least once. That is why we strongly believe the goals will come in this clash.

The odds for both teams to score are at $1.61 and a wager against that happening pays $2.28.

Highest-scoring half

Both these teams will start aggressively to get an advantage early. That is why we suggest betting on the first period to be the highest-scoring half in the match. The odds for that happening are $3.11, which is very tempting. If you believe more goals will be scored in the second half, the odds are $1.97. You can also try betting on a drawn half, which pays $3.68.

Paris St-Germain v Leipzig score prediction 18/8/2020

Leipzig have had a good run in the Champions League this season, but their road seems to be coming to an end. PSG might be struggling with injuries, but they have the quality to eliminate the German side. Our final PSG v Leipzig prediction? Paris St-Germain to win 2-1.
