Panthers v Rabbitohs Betting

The Friday night blockbuster between ladder leaders Penrith and South Sydney is huge in terms of ladder positioning as we head to the end of the Origin period and begin the run-in to the finals.

While it’s important for the Panther as they seek to stay ahead of the pack while their best players are playing for NSW, it’s even more critical for the Bunnies, who could challenge for a top-four spot or just as easily slip back into the pack scrapping for a spot in the bottom of the eight.

The key for Wayne Bennett’s Rabbitohs may well be getting off to a good start as Penrith have won the first half in each of their past 10 home matches. Combine that with the Panthers’ stingy defence and you can see it’s a huge task for the Rabbitohs.

Australian betting sites are offering around $1.65 for a Panthers win with the early line set at 3.5 points. With the weather expected to be clear, the match total line of 44.5 points should be about right.

Panthers v Rabbitohs team news

Penrith: The Panthers obviously will be hurt by Origin with back-rowers Isaah Yeo and Liam Martin and half Nathan Cleary lining up for NSW next Wednesday night, but they also have plenty of depth to call on. Jack Cogger is a reliable replacement for Cleary at halfback, and with Brian To’o being dropped from the NSW side and fullback Dylan Edwards missing selection altogether, the Panthers have an electric back line with a point to prove. Ivan Cleary has the troops to put out a rock solid best 13 thought the bench has a distinct lack of top-grade miles on the board. They have also lost Isaiah Papali’i to concussion protocols.

South Sydney: Souths have lost captain Cam Murray for Origin but even without him, they boast one of the best packs in the competition. Also they finally regain veteran centre Jack Wighton from an arm injury. Champion try-scorer Alex Johnston is out with a calf injury and rookie Dayne Jennings takes his place. The Rabbotohs are sweating on the return of game-breaker Latrell Mitchell from a calf injury but he could be another three weeks away.

Dolphins continue surge up NRL title betting markets

Last week we highlighted the Dolphins’ incredible move up the NRL title betting markets, and that has continued after their nerve-jangling 26-24 win over fellow contenders the Warriors at Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane.

In the latest betting markets, the pride of Redcliffe have moved from around $9 last week into outright second spot at $7 behind tearaway favourites Penrith at $2.60.

The Dolphins’ eight successive win has taken them to third spot on the NRL table and if they can get through Sunday’s blockbuster at Newcastle and then Origin 3 unscathed, they are in great shape to make a run at the title.

Meanwhile, the second-placed Warriors eased from $8.50 to $10 after their loss, while Melbourne Storm also have the blows, from $19 out to $29 after their 30-4 humbling against Manly, who firmed from $15 into $12.

North Queensland revived their premiership chances, according to the bookmakers anyway, with their 26-12 upset over the Panthers, bringing their title odds tumbling from $51 into $29, alongside the ailing Storm.

Bagmen have more or less put a line through the defending premiers the Broncos, who are out to $81 and sitting friendless in 13th spot on the table.

Panthers v Rabbitohs betting tips

The Panthers have a dominant recent record against Souths, winning eight of their past 10 clashes, including a 30-10 victory in round 20 last season at their most recent match.

Penrith still have a handy buffer at the top of the table, but after last week’s shock loss in Townsville, they will be in no mood to drop another one here.

It won’t be easy of course, with their talismanic leader Nathan Cleary among the Panthers on Origin duty. But they have been outstanding defensively this NRL season and will have a top-class winger with a point to prove in their ranks.

Broncos v Dolphins tip

Panthers by 10 points.
