NRL round 20: Panthers v Broncos betting tips
NRL round 20 kicks off with a clash between league heavyweights Penrith and the Brisbane Broncos on Thursday night, and their fortunes in season 2026 could scarely be more contrasting.
Ivan Cleary’s Panthers are riding high at the top of the ladder, while the Broncos are almost certainly done and dusted as far as their finals chances go.
The Panthers can deliver the last rites in this clash, and the Brisbane team should expect no mercy from a team with which they have had many epic clashes over the past few years.
Of course, in 2023 the Panthers made a miracle comeback in the grand final to deny the Broncos and land their third title in a row. Penrith made it four on end in 2024 but where then felled in an epic 2025 preliminary final 16-14 by the Broncos, who went on to secure the title.
But this season the Broncos have fallen in a heap (not helped by a horrendous run with injuries) with five wins and 16 losses to sit 14th on the ladder, while Penrith are two wins clear at the top and on course for a fifth title in six years.
The Broncos could revive some slim finals hopes with a shock win in this but the question remains if they have any desire left or if they will quietly fade further from sight in their title defence. Australian betting sites are offering up to $5 about a Broncos win in Sydney, as all the early money has been on the Panthers to win and win easily.
Panthers v Broncos team news
Panthers: The home team comes into this fresh off the bye and the Origin heroics of Nathan Cleary and co. They also regain rising star centre Casey McLean from a quad injury and tough back-rower Isaiah Papali’i (concussion). Blues trio Cleary, Liam Martin and Isaah Yeo are also back in the starting team. Their replacements performed well while they were away in their win over the Rabbitohs in round 18 but all the big guns are back now for the run home.
Broncos: The Broncos can at least put up a show with a handful of stars back in the line-up and ready for one last push. Fullback Reece Walsh, halves Ezra Mam (shoulder) and Adam Reynolds (calf), NSW powerhouse Payne Haas, Brendan Piakura and Pat Carrigan are all back while Billy Walters (ACL) is in the reserves after a long stint on the sidelines. Walters has played two games in Queensland Cup after suffering his knee injury late last year.
Sharks charge up NRL title betting markets
The New Zealand Warriors and Cronulla Sutherland have been the big movers in NRL title betting heading into round 20, with the Warriors into $7.75 from $10 after their resounding road win against the Wests Tigers.
The Sharks rocketed from $21 into $12 after their astonishing 66-0 win at Redcliffe, while the Dolphins eased from $7.50 out to $12, though not too much should be read into that scoreline as the Sharks were at close to full-strength and the Dolphins were miles off.
Elsewhere, Manly blew out fom $12 to $19 after their devastating 18-19 loss at home to the Cowboys, who firmed from $29 into $21. That result put a huge dent in the Sea Eagles’ top-four aspirations.
The defending premiers Brisbane went from $81 to $251 and nothing short of a win against the Panthers on Thursday can salvage their finals hopes.

Panthers v Broncos betting tips
There has been a torrent of money for the home team to win and also to cover the huge line of 13.5 points but we are betting on the Broncos to at least show a little pride, and also the fact that they are putting out their best team for many weeks.
The Broncos have lost eight straight games but have at least show plenty of grit in their past two losses against finals contenders the Roosters and Sharks. We’re not saying they will win against the high-flying Panthers; just that the line of 13.5 points looks a little rich against a team whose best could almost match the 2026 Panthers.
We expect Brisbane to turn in a surprising performance in this one, even if their NRL season is bound to end in bitter disappointment.

Panthers by 6 points.

- Broncos +13.5 points/match total over 45.5 points at $4.60 with Australian betting sites.
- Deine Mariner (Broncos) any-time try-scorer at around $2.70. The flyer will benefit from having the big guns back in the middle of the park.
