Tips for betting on the Phoenix Open

  • 11 out of the past 12 winners of the Phoenix Open have won with a score between -14 and -18. Legendary left-hander Phil Mickelson, who is skipping this year’s event, shot a remarkable 28 under in 2013.
  • Look for the good drivers: Notice we didn’t say long drivers here, although that would also help. Scottsdale is one of those courses where consistency and accuracy can trump distance.
  • The greens are big at Scottsdale, which can lead to three-putts. Check the stats for the good putters and take a good look at the conditions before placing a bet on the Phoenix Open. The wind can be an important factor.

Phoenix Open best bets & predictions

The World Gambling List has scoured the betting ahead of the Phoenix Open and given you our best bet, roughie of the tournament and even thrown in a value bet for good measure.

Best bet: Xander Schauffele to win

Schauffele is paying $19.00 to win this tournament, and has the form in the bank to be a legitimate chance, after a strong showing where he showcased his control through the early-season West Coast Swing. We like Schaffele for two reasons: he’s at reasonable odds despite being one of the best chances to win, in our opinion, and he hit a huge percentage of fairways at his last outing, which is something that is required at Scottsdale.

Roughie: Charley Hoffman to cause Phoenix Open Boilover

Golf is one of those sports where you can produce a blinding round out of nowhere and win a big tournament, and we are predicting Hoffman has the ability to do so. Hoffman shot rounds of 66, 68, 70 and 72 last year to finish 21st, nine shots behind winner Rickie Fowler. This year some experienced campaigners are not playing at the Phoenix Open, which opens the door for a journeyman like Hoffman, who is not frightened of going low.

Phoenix Open value bet tip: Sungjae Im

Sungjae Im finished eighth at this tournament last year with four rounds under 70, which indicates he knows his way around Scottsdale. With a slightly weaker field we think Im can go close to winning the tournament at odds of $34 with William Hill.
