South Africa v England 3rd Test betting predictions, tips & match preview

Betting odds on the South Africa-England Third Test in Port Elizabeth are out, with England our tip as they have all the momentum.
The Third Test at St George’s Park starts on Thursday, January 16, with the series level at 1-1 after England’s 189-run win at Newlands in Cape Town.
While South Africa did not quite hold on for the draw we tipped at healthy odds, it was another success for the World Gambling List’s cricket expert as we successfully predicted Ben Stokes would be man of the match at $10. This followed on from our first Test success with Quinton de Kock at $15. Some may fear we have only one way to go from here!
As mentioned, the regenerating England team is riding high after Newlands, while all the pressure is on the home team heading to a ground which holds few fears for visiting teams, especially England.

South Africa-England cricket Third Test team news

One downside for England is that veteran paceman James Anderson has been ruled out of the final two Tests after suffering a rib injury.
Anderson bowled just two overs after lunch on the final day of the memorable 189-run win in the second Test.
Anderson, of course, broke down during his only Test appearance during the Ashes series in 2019 and also missed the two-Test series against New Zealand.
He played in the first two Tests in South Africa and was great in the first innings at Newlands with a five-wicket haul, but the good news for England is they have seam bowlers Jofra Archer, Mark Wood and Chris Woakes available again after various ailments.
Things are on the up for England in what has been something of a cursed tour. A dozen players and tour members were hit by a mystery virus before the first Test won by South Africa at Centurion, while Rory Burns and now Anderson have been ruled out by injuries. Ben Stokes’s father also suffered a stroke and remains in hospital in South Africa.
Meanwhile, the Proteas have decided to stick with the same team that was beaten in the Second Test, though paceman Dane Paterson will travel to Port Elizabeth with the team.
In fact, they named the same squad for the final two Tests, with the series finale starting at Wanderers in Johannesburg on January 24.

South Africa v England best bets

As always when we preview cricket matches, we provide a few best bets, and with this series delicately poised this match should be tight from the word go. The toss is all important.

England to win Third Test at $2.25

While both teams are rebuilding, there is a more of a sense of excitement about the England team and they have a great record at the ground, though most of the results are so old as to be irrelevant. Of the nine Test matches between the teams at the ground, England have won five and South Africa only one, with three drawn matches.

Joe Root top score in England’s first innings at $4

The England superstar is overdue for a big one on this tour. With an inexperienced group of batsmen around him, this is his time to put his stamp on the series. You should shop around as you may be able to do better than the $4 we saw at William Hill. Don’t forget Root’s double ton in the second Test in New Zealand only six or seven weeks ago.

Joe Root man of the match at $9

Well, if Root can step up to the plate there is no reason we can’t make it three from three with our man-of-the-match predictions. We expect a fairly difficult time for the batsmen in PE and he is the best of the bunch, technically.

South Africa v England prediction

The toss is all important here. We have tipped England but it would be wise to check the weather closer to the match as the long-range forecast tips showers for the weekend. It’s usually a lively strip at St George’s Park but bad weather could bring the draw into play. But we are happy to be on the tourists to take a 2-1 lead in the series.
