Spanish gambling operators set to enact nationwide deposit limit scheme

Spain is introducing a centralised deposit limit system that will restrict how much customers can deposit across all nationally licensed online gambling operators, closing a loophole that previously allowed players to spread their deposits across multiple websites.

The Directorate General for Gambling Regulation (DGOJ) announced the measures on October 21, alongside the launch of a new digital portal allowing customers to monitor their gambling activity.

Under the system, default deposit limits will be set at €700 per day, €1,750 per week and €3,300 over four weeks.

Unlike the existing operator-specific limits, the new restrictions will apply collectively across a player’s accounts with all participating licensed gambling businesses.

The DGOJ estimates that approximately one-third of active online gamblers in Spain use more than one operator.

Players will be permitted to request changes to their limits, including increases or removal, but those changes will not take effect immediately.

A three-business-day waiting period will apply, while customers will only be allowed to increase their limits once every three months.

The centralised system is currently undergoing testing and is scheduled to take effect on March 26, 2027.

Spain has also launched a free online player portal accessible through the country’s Cl@ve digital identity system.

The portal allows users to view consolidated information about deposits, stakes, winnings and losses across licensed gambling websites.

Customers can also establish spending alerts, manage deposit limits and identify accounts potentially opened using their personal information without authorisation.

The new system represents a significant expansion of Spain’s centralised gambling oversight, shifting part of the responsibility for monitoring customer spending from individual operators to a nationwide regulatory framework.

The changes will apply to gambling operators licensed by the DGOJ for Spain’s national online market.
