This is a series of great unknowns with little Test cricket played in the region in the past year. England are coming off a successful tour of South Africa, while Sri Lanka also toured South Africa but were well beaten in two Tests. Sri Lanka suffered a string of injuries on that tour and their final line-up will not be know until just before the toss.
England have a busy schedule ahead and have lost Moeen Ali, who has contracted COVID-19, while paceman Jofra Archer and star all-rounder Ben Stokes have been rested from this series.

In a strange twist England have been in Sri Lanka longer than the home team. England have recalled batsman Jonny Bairstow while seamer Chris Woakes is not certain to feature after just finishing his seven-day isolation.
Sri Lanka will have veteran all-rounder Angelo Mathews back in to add some stabbility to their batting order, though he is not expect to bowl in this match.

The young leggie is in the early stages of his career but he should get conditions to suit here in Galle. Hasaranga was born in Galle so knows the conditions only too well and he is primed to be a big part of the regeneration of the Sri Lanka team.
