Three sentenced over 2024 UK election betting scandal
Three people have received suspended prison sentences for using confidential information to bet on the date of Britain’s 2024 General Election.
Anthony Lee, Laura Lee and Amy Hind were sentenced at Southwark Crown Court on October 23 after previously pleading guilty to cheating offences under Section 42 of the Gambling Act 2005.
Anthony Lee, who served as the Conservative Party’s Director of Campaigning, received a sentence of 10 months and two weeks imprisonment, suspended for 12 months, alongside 100 hours of unpaid work.

His wife, Laura Lee, a former Conservative parliamentary candidate, received a sentence of four months and two weeks imprisonment, suspended for 12 months, and 40 hours of unpaid work.
Amy Hind received a six-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, and was ordered to complete 50 hours of unpaid work.
All three were also prohibited from using online gambling applications for 12 months.
The court heard that Anthony Lee had access to confidential discussions about the timing of the election before then Prime Minister Rishi Sunak publicly announced the July 4 polling date on May 22, 2024.
He used the information to place bets and passed it to his wife, who also wagered on the election date.
Hind, a former Conservative Party employee working for the NHS at the time, placed bets after receiving confidential information.
Gambling Commission General Counsel Katharine Diamond described the prosecution as a significant case for the regulator.
“Betting markets must be fair and must not be undermined by people using confidential information for their own benefit,” Diamond said.
The Commission confirmed that former Conservative MP Craig Williams has also pleaded guilty to a related cheating offence and is awaiting sentencing.
Several additional defendants face trials scheduled for 2027 and 2028. Those charges remain allegations pending court outcomes.
The sentences mark an important development in the investigation into alleged misuse of political information for betting purposes.
