WSOP set to land in Mexico City, satellite in via GGPoker
The World Series of Poker Circuit will make its Mexico City debut later this year, with organisers confirming a 12-ring festival at the Hotel Barcelo Mexico Santa Fe from August 31 through September 11.
The inaugural WSOP Circuit Mexico City series, operated in partnership with Bigbola Casinos, marks the first time an official World Series of Poker Circuit stop has been staged in the Mexican capital, underlining the growing importance of the Latin American poker market.
A $1,700 USD Main Event will headline the schedule from September 4-9, while every gold ring winner will also secure a $5,000 package to the WSOP Circuit Championship in the Bahamas. The full event schedule is expected to be released in the coming weeks.
Online poker giant GGPoker has been named the exclusive satellite partner for the festival, with online qualifiers set to begin on July 2. Satellite entries will start from as little as $5, with weekly freerolls and step qualifiers feeding into $215 mega satellites awarding Main Event seats.
The WSOP Circuit brand has expanded aggressively outside the United States in recent years, with stops across Europe, Asia and the Caribbean, but the Mexico City launch represents one of its most significant pushes into Latin America to date.
Tournament organisers said the series is expected to attract players from across the region who previously faced expensive long-haul travel to compete in official WSOP Circuit events.
The series will be hosted in the Santa Fe financial district at the five-star Hotel Barcelo Mexico Santa Fe, with special accommodation rates available for players throughout the festival.
The World Series of Poker, founded in 1970, remains the most recognisable live poker brand globally, with WSOP Circuit gold rings considered among the most prestigious prizes outside the annual Las Vegas bracelet series.
