888Poker enters Alberta's regulated gambling market

Online poker operator 888 has become the first gambling company to launch a regulated real-money poker platform in Alberta, introducing a dedicated player pool for customers in Canada’s newest competitive online gambling market.

The launch took place on October 13, coinciding with the expiration of Alberta’s three-month transition period for previously unregulated gambling operators.

While the province’s new licensing framework opened on July 13, online poker had remained unavailable through the initial wave of commercial operators.

888Poker (888poker review) has now become the first company to offer the product under Alberta’s new regulatory arrangements.

The launch is particularly significant because the platform operates with a segregated player pool, meaning Alberta customers can currently compete only against other players located within the province.

They cannot share tables with customers using 888’s Ontario poker platform or its international poker network.

The restriction has raised questions about the commercial viability of online poker in Alberta, which has a population of approximately five million.

Online poker relies on attracting enough active players to maintain cash games and tournament schedules, making player liquidity an important consideration for operators.

Despite those challenges, 888 has launched a selection of poker games and tournaments for Alberta customers.

The offering includes Texas Hold’em and Omaha cash games, alongside Mystery Bounty, knockout and other tournament formats.

Players are required to download new software and create accounts specifically for the Alberta platform, while the company has also launched online casino products in the province through its separate 888 Casino offering.

888 was previously the first operator to introduce regulated online poker in Ontario when that province opened its competitive gambling market in April 2022.

Its Alberta launch gives the company a similar early position in Canada’s second commercial online gambling jurisdiction.

Other major poker operators have yet to confirm comparable launches.

GGPoker (GGPoker review) has registered with Alberta’s gambling regulator but has not announced when it intends to introduce a locally regulated poker platform.

PokerStars, meanwhile, informed Alberta customers that it would withdraw from the market when the transition period ended.

BetMGM and other established gambling companies could potentially introduce poker services in Alberta, although no launch dates have been confirmed.

One important issue for the market is whether Alberta and Ontario will eventually be permitted to share regulated poker liquidity.

Allowing customers in the two provinces to compete against one another could create larger player pools and support more substantial tournament guarantees.
