AB Online gambling

Alberta has a population of around 5 million people and is home to one of Canada’s newest regulated online gambling markets.

For many years, Albertans had access to just one provincially regulated online gambling platform, while offshore online casinos and sportsbooks also accepted local players. That changed in July 2026, when Alberta officially opened its online gambling market to licensed private operators under a new provincial regulatory framework.

Today, Albertans can choose from a growing number of licensed online casinos and sportsbooks operating under the supervision of the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC). The reforms were introduced to provide greater consumer protection, encourage responsible gambling and keep more gambling revenue within the province.

Alongside online gambling, Alberta continues to offer a wide range of regulated land-based gambling, including commercial and First Nations casinos, bingo halls, horse racing, charitable gaming and lottery products.

Casino gaming in Alberta is regulated by the provincial government, with proceeds from gaming continuing to support charities, community organisations and public initiatives across the province.

While many offshore gambling sites still accept players from Alberta, we always recommend choosing licensed and regulated online gambling sites wherever possible, as they offer stronger consumer protections, responsible gambling tools and regulatory oversight.

The Canadian gambling list always recommends wagering with legal online gambling sites.

Alberta gambling news

Real money gambling sites in Alberta

Alberta gambling sites are now widely available, with the province launching a regulated commercial online gambling market in 2026.

While Ontario was the first Canadian province to open its market to licensed private operators, Alberta followed suit in July 2026, allowing licensed online casinos and sportsbooks to legally operate under the supervision of the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC).

The move is expected to reduce the province’s reliance on offshore operators by giving players access to licensed gambling sites that offer stronger consumer protections, responsible gambling tools and local regulatory oversight. As a result, many of the world’s biggest gambling brands have either launched in Alberta or are expected to enter the market as it continues to expand.

The top gambling sites for Alberta now include a mix of established Canadian online casinos and internationally recognised brands. Many companies that already operate in Ontario have expanded into Alberta, while others continue to seek licences as the market matures.

At the same time, many offshore gambling sites continue to accept Albertan players. Some of the most popular are licensed in respected jurisdictions such as Malta, the United Kingdom and Curaçao, although we generally recommend choosing licensed Alberta operators where possible.

Real money gambling at Alberta online casinos includes classics such as online slots, blackjack, roulette, poker and baccarat. Players will also find thousands of live dealer games from leading providers such as Evolution, including popular game-show titles and traditional casino tables streamed in real time.

Without a doubt, the most popular games at Alberta gambling sites remain online slots, with most licensed casinos offering libraries of well over 2,000 real money slot games from dozens of leading software developers.

There are few options for those wishing to bet on sports in Alberta, but there are betting games: PRO-LINE, Pro-Picks, Point-Spread, Pro-Picks Pools & Props.

These games are run by the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission (AGLC) and Western Canada Lottery Corporation and entries can be placed at various land-based lottery outlets and online. There are also online betting options available, including at a website licensed in Canada, and various offshore gambling options.

The Canadian-regulated online option is SportsInteraction. The downfall of betting with a local website, rather than one based offshore, is the restrictions placed on the bet types you can access.

An example of this is the inability to place a head-to-head bet because of restrictive laws, while if you attempt to place the wager with an offshore site — say Bet365 — you will have no such problem. The odds at offshore sites are generally better as well which, until the laws change, means more people are betting with offshore sites than the local equivalents.

Obviously some of the most popular things to wager on for those in Alberta include hockey (NHL and CHL), various basketball competitions such as the NBA, and American and Canadian football. Esports and many winter sports also attract major interest.

Check out our Canadian sports betting sites guide, which has extensive information about how to bet and the top sportsbooks for Alberta.

Casinos in Alberta

Alberta differs from many other provinces in Canada in that its casinos are privately operated, although they must all be licensed and regulated by the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC).

There are more than 25 land-based casinos across Alberta, including several operated by First Nations on reserve land. The province also offers racing entertainment centres, community gaming facilities and charitable gaming venues.

The best-known casino in Alberta is the River Cree Resort & Casino, located just outside Edmonton. It features more than 1,300 slot machines, over 40 live table games, a poker room, sportsbook facilities, off-track horse race betting, multiple restaurants and a hotel.

There are tens of thousands of slot machines across Alberta’s casinos, with progressive jackpots remaining among the province’s most popular attractions. One of the best known is the Diamond Millions progressive jackpot, which links eligible slot machines across participating casinos and racing entertainment centres. Since launching in 2012, the jackpot has produced more than 20 million-dollar winners, with the prize resetting to C$1 million each time it is won before continuing to grow.

There are also more than 20 bingo halls operating throughout the province, with many run by charitable and not-for-profit organisations that use gaming proceeds to support community programs.

Players in Alberta also have access to a growing number of regulated online casinos and sportsbooks following the launch of the province’s commercial online gambling market in July 2026, alongside a number of offshore gambling sites that continue to accept Canadian players.

Because online casinos were largely unaddressed in Canadian law for many years, offshore gambling sites became extremely popular with Canadian players. Today, while Alberta has its own regulated online gambling market, many offshore operators continue to accept players from the province.

Canadian law provides that provinces are responsible for regulating gambling within their own borders, which is why provinces such Alberta now license online gambling operators. The Kahnawake Gaming Commissionalso remains one of the best-known licensing authorities in North America, although its licences generally cater to international operators rather than provincial regulated markets.

The biggest change came in July 2026, when Alberta launched a competitive regulated online gambling market, giving residents access to licensed online casinos and sportsbooks operating under provincial oversight. This provides Albertans with a regulated alternative offering stronger consumer protections, responsible gambling tools and local dispute resolution.

At the same time, many offshore gambling sites continue to accept Alberta players. Some of the biggest international brands licensed in jurisdictions such as Malta, the United Kingdom and Curaçao support Canadian dollars, offer local payment methods and continue to attract Canadian customers.

Games available at online casinos have expanded dramatically over the past decade. Alongside classic online slots and table games such as blackjack, roulette, baccarat and poker, players can now enjoy live dealer casinos, crash games, instant-win games, TV-style game shows like Crazy TimeMonopoly Live and Lightning Roulette, plus thousands of modern video slots featuring Megaways mechanics, jackpots, bonus buys and other innovative gameplay features. This huge variety is one of the main reasons online casinos continue to grow in popularity among Alberta players.

Racing – thoroughbred, harness & greyhounds

Horse Racing Alberta (HRA) looks after all things racing in Alberta. It was set up by the Alberta Government in 1996, at the same time as the Racing Corporation Act became active.

The topic of what is the best racing or race in the world has caused many an argument, but here are some individual races and carnivals that should feature in that discussion (in no particular order!).

Alberta gambling laws

Alberta’s Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Act remains the primary legislation governing gambling throughout the province, with all regulated casino gaming, sports betting and lottery activities operating under its framework.

The Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC) is the provincial regulator responsible for overseeing gambling, liquor and cannabis industries. Formed in 2018 following the merger of the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission and the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission’s cannabis responsibilities after legalization, the AGLC continues to regulate gambling across the province, including privately owned casinos, First Nations casinos, bingo venues, racing, charitable gaming and licensed online gambling.

Alberta has long been regarded as proactive when it comes to reducing gambling-related harm. The Alberta Gambling Research Institute continues to support research into responsible gambling and provides evidence-based recommendations to government, regulators and industry stakeholders.

The biggest change came in 2026, when Alberta officially opened its online gambling market to private operators. From July 13, 2026, licensed commercial sportsbooks and online casinos were permitted to launch under a regulated framework, ending Play Alberta’s position as the province’s only regulated online gambling platform.

Under the new model, the AGLC remains the regulator, while licensed private operators can legally offer online casino games and sports betting to Alberta residents through approved platforms. The move is designed to give players a safer alternative to offshore gambling sites while increasing consumer protections and keeping more gambling revenue within the province.

Despite the launch of Alberta’s regulated market, many offshore gambling websites continue to accept Alberta players. Canadian law generally targets operators rather than individual players, and there remains no law preventing Alberta residents from placing bets with offshore sites, although the provincial government encourages players to use licensed operators that meet Alberta’s regulatory standards.

As with the rest of Canada, gambling winnings remain tax-free for recreational players, with only professional gamblers potentially subject to taxation depending on their circumstances.

The introduction of single-event sports betting in 2021 paved the way for Alberta’s fully regulated commercial online gambling market. The 2026 reforms represent the biggest overhaul of gambling laws in the province in decades, bringing Alberta closer to Ontario’s gambling model while providing consumers with greater choice, stronger protections and access to dozens of licensed betting and casino brands.

Lottery in Alberta

The Western Canada Lottery Corporation (WCLC) was founded in 1974 and is the regional lottery organisation responsible for managing lottery games on behalf of the governments of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, with Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut participating as associate members. WCLC works in partnership with the Interprovincial Lottery Corporation (ILC) to offer Canada’s national lottery games, while also operating several regional lottery products.

Today, WCLC’s portfolio includes major draw games such as Lotto Max, Lotto 6/49, Daily Grand, as well as regional games including Western 649 and Western Max. It also offers instant Scratch & Win tickets, sports lottery products through Sport Select, and a range of other lottery games sold throughout Western Canada.

Buying lottery tickets has become much more convenient in 2026. Players can still purchase tickets from thousands of authorised lottery retailers across Western Canada, but many games are also available digitally. Residents can buy single-draw tickets through the Lotto Spot mobile app while physically located within the WCLC region. In Alberta, lottery tickets are also available through Play Alberta, while Manitoba residents can purchase online through PlayNow. Players can also buy advance-play tickets and subscriptions for multiple draws, making it easier than ever to participate without visiting a retail outlet.
