New Zealand bans credit card deposits ahead of regulated iGaming launch
New Zealand will not allow credit card deposits at online casinos and betting sites, when the industry is regulated in 2026, after the Government confirmed the restriction as a central harm-minimisation measure in its proposed Online Casino Gambling Bill.
Internal Affairs Minister Brooke van Velden said banning credit cards is designed to curb gambling-related debt and prevent players from spending money they cannot afford as the online market expands.
The Bill, currently before Parliament, would permit up to 15 licensed online casinos to operate legally and advertise in New Zealand from late next year. Ministers believe the credit card ban is a key concession to MPs concerned about problem gambling, with debate on the legislation set to continue into 2026.
Under the proposed framework, gambling operators in New Zealand would be barred from accepting credit cards, while detailed rules are finalised through regulation.
The Government estimates licence sales could raise around NZ$44 million, alongside a requirement for operators to contribute four percent of gross gambling revenue to community causes. Critics, however, have questioned enforcement and whether the restriction will deter licensed operators.
The move mirrors Australia which banned credit card deposits in their regulated sports betting industry, although they have not regulated online casinos, meaning many Aussies still deposit to offshore gambling sites using credit cards.
Despite the NZ ban, many credit cards are accepted at online casinos that accept players from many different countries.
