South Africa beat Afghanistan at T20 World Cup

South Africa edged Afghanistan in one of the most dramatic matches in ICC T20 World Cup 2026 history, with the contest decided only after two Super Overs in Ahmedabad on Wednesday.

Afghanistan looked set to cause the first major boil-over of the tournament after entering the clash as rank outsiders with cricket betting sites, but the Proteas execution in the two super overs was better, and they escaped with the points.

Both teams finished tied on 187 in regulation, forcing the first Super Over which also ended in a deadlock at 17-17 after Tristan Stubbs’ last-ball six for South Africa.

In the deciding tiebreaker, South Africa posted 23, with Stubbs and David Miller clearing three sixes between them, before restricting Afghanistan to 19-2, securing a four-run victory.

Top order hitting from Afghanistan’s Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who scored 84 off 42 deliveries, kept the contest alive, while South Africa’s sustained aggression with bat and ball saw them through.

Lungi Ngidi’s all-round performance earned him Player of the Match honours. The unprecedented double Super Over encounter places both sides’ Super Eight hopes into sharp focus, with South Africa unbeaten after two games and Afghanistan facing a tough path forward.

South African betting sites have the Proteas on the third line of betting, behind India and Australia, at 6.00 to win the T20 World Cup.

The Proteas face another tough task on Saturday when they clash with New Zealand at Narendra Modi Stadium, with Aiden Markram’s outfit priced at 1.72, while the Kiwis also have some fans at 2.10.

Afghanistan continued their World Cup campaign on Monday when they clash with the United Arab Emirates in Delhi, with no odds available for this clash yet.
