Illegal gambling ring uncovered in South Africa
Authorities in South Africa’s North West province have uncovered a large-scale illegal gambling operation in Ganyesa during a multi-agency enforcement crackdown targeting unlicensed gaming activity.
The compliance operation was led by MEC for Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism Bitsa Lenkopane alongside senior officials from the North West Gambling Board and several enforcement agencies, including SAPS, Home Affairs Immigration, Consumer Affairs and Municipal Health and Safety inspectors.

The raid uncovered 68 illegal gambling machines operating inside an internet café opposite the Boxer Shopping Complex. Authorities issued a R2,500 fine under the Criminal Procedure Act and cited multiple breaches of the North West Gambling Act.
Inspectors also confiscated five Chinese Roulette gambling machines from two local shops. Both businesses were separately fined R2,500 for operating unlawful gambling devices.
The North West Gambling Board said the operation formed part of a broader effort to combat illegal gambling networks that undermine licensed South African gambling operators and expose local communities to unregulated betting activity.
Officials warned that further inspections and enforcement actions will continue across the province.
Legal gambling in South Africa includes sports betting, both retail and online wagering, lotteries and land-based gambling, including casinos.
