Scandinavia heads Goodwood Cup market as festival nears
Glorious Goodwood returns on Tuesday with one of Britain’s premier staying contests taking centre stage, as Scandinavia heads betting for the Group 1 Goodwood Cup at the opening meeting of the five-day summer festival.
The Aidan O’Brien-trained colt has been installed the 1.85 favourite with betting sites after emerging as one of Europe’s leading stayers this season, with Trawlerman (2.90) the chief danger. The pair are well clear of the remainder of the field, headed by Al Riffa and Rahiebb at 12.00.
Held against the backdrop of the Sussex Downs, Goodwood is widely regarded as one of the world’s most picturesque racecourses and hosts around 40 races across five days, including three Group 1 features.
Tuesday’s Goodwood Cup is one of Britain’s oldest and most prestigious staying races, forming the middle leg of the country’s Stayers’ Triple Crown between Royal Ascot’s Gold Cup and the Doncaster Cup.
The festival continues on Wednesday with the Sussex Stakes, often dubbed the “Duel on the Downs” for its tradition of pitting elite three-year-old milers against older rivals, before Thursday’s Nassau Stakes for fillies and mares. Friday’s feature is the King George Stakes, which attracts some of the world’s fastest sprinters.
Beyond the racing, Goodwood has built a reputation as one of the highlights of the British social calendar, with fashion, hospitality and entertainment combining to create a quintessential English summer sporting spectacle.
The meeting has also enjoyed a strong connection with Hong Kong racing, with several top jockeys who have ridden extensively in the territory, including Vincent Ho and Harry Bentley, having tasted success at the famous Sussex venue.
