AFL round 16 update and premiership betting

AFL Round 12 kicks off on Thursday night, August 13, with the Sydney Swans-GWS derby being played at Optus Stadium in Perth.

Round 12 runs through until Monday, August 17, when the league’s run of 33 matches in 20 days ends with the Richmond v Gold Coast match at the Gabba in Brisbane.

There are three precious days for clubs and players (and punters) to regroup before round 13 kicks off on Friday, August 21.

But first to round 12 and the match of the round is without doubt the stand-alone Friday night clash between Geelong and Port Adelaide at Metricon Stadium on the Gold Coast.

The Power are rated $1.78 favourites against the Cat ($2.05) and deservedly so after their impressive win against defending premiers Richmond at their latest outing. But the Cats are also in great form and had little trouble beating the disappointing St Kilda on Monday night.

An influential factor could well be that Port Adelaide will go into the match with an extra 48 hours break, though the Cats’ Monday night win was little more than a training drill against the Saints.

The Melbourne-Collingwood twilight clash on Saturday at the Gabba also looms as crucial for two teams which have been slightly off the pace this season. This could well end up deciding which of them is a finalist, with the Magpies hopeful of regaining skipper Scott Pendlebury from a calf injury.

On Sunday, St Kilda and Essendon clash on another eight-point game as far as finals football is concerned, with the Saints desperate to recapture the form that had them tagged the most improved team in the competition this season.

AFL 2020 premiership betting update

Everything is turning to gold for the West Coast. They have stormed into outright premiership favouritism at $4.50 (in from $5), their list is reasonably healthy and there is a fair chance the AFL grand final will be played at their home ground.

The Eagles continued their resurgence with a comfortable win against a competitive Carlton and should chalk up another against Hawthorn this weekend.

Richmond, who have won two flags in the past three years, eased from $4.75 out to $6 after their defeat at the hands of Port Adelaide. That move is surprising considering that match was played on Port’s home ground and Richmond have several important players to return to the side in coming weeks.

The Power moved from $8 into $6.5 to sit alongside the Brisbane Lions on the third line of betting. The Lions are another that could get a big leg-up later this year as there is also a good chance the grand final will be played in Brisbane.

Geelong are just hanging around in betting and moved from $13 to $11 after thrashing upstarts St Kilda, and the Cats sit alongside the Magpies, who are trying to deal with an extensive injury toll, as has become their lot over the past few seasons.
