Thiem is the $1.20 favourite with leading tennis betting site Betway, while Zverev is paying 4.35 to cause an upset. 

Neither player has won a grand slam before and both will be hell-bent on cashing in on Novak Djokovic’s disqualification and the absence of Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. 

Thiem has won the last three encounters between these players, including a four-set win at the Australian Open earlier this year. Two of these victories have been on hardcourt, the same surface as the US Open. Overall Thiem leads their head to head 7-2. 

Alexander Zverev’s path to the US Open final

Zverev has suffered several scares on his way to the US Open final, including a five-set win over Pablo Carreno Busta in the semi-final. Zverev dropped the first two sets against the Spanish no.20 seed before reeling off three successive sets to reach his first grand slam final. 

Zverev also played a tough four setter against Borna Coric in the quarter-final, winning the second and third sets in tie-breakers.

Dominic Thiem’s path to the US Open final

The Austrian has probably had a tougher path into the US Open final than his opponent, beating Daniil Medvedev in straight sets in the semi-final and thrashing young guns Alex De Minaur and Felix Auger-Aliassime in the previous two rounds. 

Thiem also has a four-set win over Marin Cilic in the bank at this tournament and has largely produced a flawless tournament.
