Ashes 4th Test Predictions – England v Australia betting tips

South Africa v England 3rd Test betting predictions, tips & match preview

ONE of the most gripping Ashes series in modern history will continue at Old Trafford on Wednesday, and we’re predicting Australia to finally stitch up the magical urn on England soil for the first time since 2001.

The Aussies will go into the clash as underdogs in Ashes betting and will make several changes to the team that was beaten in heartbreaking circumstances by the magnificent Ben Stokes and England at Headingley, a result which levelled the series 1-1.

The dominant force in the opening two Tests, Steve Smith, will return to the Australian team after his knockout blow from Jofra Archer, while fiery paceman Mitchell Starc, who has been sidelined for the entire Ashes so far, looks likely to also come into the line-up after an impressive tour game performance. The Aussies have indicated Usman Khawaja, after a lean series, is likely the man who will make way for Smith while James Pattinson is the logical man to be dropped for Starc.

Meanwhile, England are likely to go into the clash unchanged but they have announced plans to move No.4 Joe Denly into the opener’s position with Jason Roy set to be demoted to either No.4 or 5, with Headingley hero Ben Stokes potentially moved into the No.4 slot.

Pundits are predicting the fourth Ashes Test wicket in Manchester to offer the pacemen some help in the opening few days, but like Edgbaston it is then expected to help the spinners, which will be some welcome relief for Nathan Lyon, who took some stick from the England batsman in the past two Tests.

England v Australia 4th Test odds

Head to head: England $2.50, Draw $3.40, Australia $2.80

England have been installed favourites to win this match and take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five-match series. However, there has been some money about for an Australia victory, with some questioning if the menace of Jofra Archer can continue on for another Test.

Archer is the bookies’ favourite to take the most wickets for England at $3.50, with the Australian equivalent being Josh Hazlewood ($4.00) but we are firmly in Mitchell Starc’s camp, with the star paceman yet to play a Test in England in this series and priced at $5.00 to take the most wickets.

All-rounder Stokes, who we love for man-of-the-match betting, has been priced an equal favourite along with Smith to claim this honour at $6.00, while Joe Root ($8.00), David Warner ($11.00) and Archer ($8.00) are also fancied in the betting.

Jofra Archer for man of the match

Has there been a more menacing start to a career from a fast bowler in the Test arena than Jofra Archer’s first two games? The lanky paceman has snared 13 wickets at 13.5 to almost make champion paceman Jimmy Anderson’s absence irrelevant. He also forced Smith to sit out the third Test, after his brilliant form in the opening matches. While Australia is very familiar with Archer because of his Big Bash exploits, the way he has adapted to the red ball is first-rate. While we are going in a different direction with our bets this match, it would be remiss not to include such a dominant player in our best bets. Archer is paying $8.00 to claim man-of-the-match honours.

Mitchell Starc to take most wickets in England’s first innings

While we’re probably unlikely to know if Mitchell Starc is even playing in this match until just hours before the first ball, we think the time is right to unleash Starc in a bid to reverse the Ashes momentum England gained last match. Starc will come out fired up and he took a match best seven wickets in the tour game the Aussies have just played. His rhythm looked good and he’s had plenty of time to adapt to the red ball. How the Aussies would have killed to have Starc to clean up the English tail last start. You can back Starc for most wickets in England’s first innings with William Hill, priced at $5.00.

Keep safe: Nathan Lyon for most wickets betting

Keep tabs on how the wicket is playing – undoubtedly Lyon is a master of his craft and will bounce back at some stage. The conditions have not suited the off-spinner in the last two Tests, but there is some talk that this wicket will break up on days 4 and 5 and provide Lyon with the conditions he thrives in. Ashes 4th Test prediction – England vs Australia

Sometime it’s the intangibles in Test cricket that are enough to get a team over the line, and while we’re not sure how Smith will return from the nasty blow and subsequent concussion after the blow by Archer, his experience leading Australia will be invaluable to captain Tim Paine, with the former captain set to resume his customary role at first slip. Some pundits have even suggested if Smith was present at first slip in the pulsating final sessions at Headingley, Australia would have won. The Aussies may have lost the last game because Smith was out, but we firmly believe they are in a stronger position following his absence after the emergence of Marcus Labuschagne: cricket’s first concussion sub. While there are no certainties we are predicting Australia’s greater bowling depth to finally catch up with the skittish home team. They can win here to secure the Ashes.
