Betway goes legal in Alberta as second wave of operators arrives
Betway has officially entered Alberta’s regulated online gambling market, moving the international sportsbook and casino brand from the province’s grey market into the new locally licensed system.
The Alberta iGaming Corporation confirmed Betway began taking bets through the regulated market this week, which essentially means customers were switched from their .com international domain, to the Betway.ca website.

Golden Tiger Casino has also gone live, becoming the first of seven Apollo Entertainment brands registered in Alberta to launch.
The additions are part of what is emerging as a second wave of launches following Alberta’s regulated market opening on July 13, 2026.
More than 30 online casino and sportsbook sites are now operating with provincial approval.
For Betway, the transition is particularly notable because the brand was already accessible to Alberta players before regulation.
The new launch moves those customers into a system overseen by Alberta’s gambling authorities, where operators must meet local requirements covering responsible gambling, player protection and regulatory compliance.
Alberta becomes Betway’s second provincially regulated Canadian market after Ontario.
The company followed a similar path in Ontario after that province opened its competitive iGaming market in April 2022, transitioning an existing Canadian customer base into the locally regulated system.
Super Group, the owner of Betway, has registered five platforms for Alberta, meaning the Betway launch could be followed by additional brands from the group, with Jackpot City another rumoured to be entering this province.
Alberta is Canada’s second province to adopt an Ontario-style competitive online gambling model. Previously, provincially regulated online gambling was primarily available through the government-owned PlayAlberta platform.
The July opening changed that by allowing private casino and betting sites to obtain approval and compete within a regulated commercial market.
That has attracted most of the major international names.
BetMGM, FanDuel and DraftKings are among operators already active, while Stake Canada received operator registration on September 24 and is working through the remaining steps required before launch.
For players, the rapid growth of the market means Alberta is beginning to resemble Ontario, where dozens of private gambling sites compete under provincial regulation.
The difference is that Alberta’s transition has happened considerably faster.
Betway’s launch also demonstrates one of the principal aims of the new regime: shifting operators that were already accepting Alberta customers into a framework where the provincial regulator has direct oversight.
