NRL finals week 1, 2020: Rabbitohs v Knights betting tips, prediction & odds

NRL round 13: Dragons v Broncos

Welcome to our South Sydney v Newcastle preview, prediction and odds update for their NRL finals clash at ANZ Stadium on Sunday, October 4.

This is NRL elimination final 2, with the winners to play Parramatta, who lost their clash on Saturday night against the Melbourne Storm. For the losers the season comes to an end.

South Sydney coach Wayne Bennett has insisted his team won’t be distracted by the saga surrounding former player and assistant coach Sam Burgess this week. Burgess has been accused of heavy recreational drug use and other unsavoury incidents.

It’s hard to get a line through the recent form of these teams, especially Souths, who were embarrassed a fortnight ago by cellar dwellers Canterbury 26-16 and then last week produced one of the best performances of the season to crush powerful Sydney Roosters 60-8.

Meanwhile, the Knights, who are playing their first final since 2013, have been thrashed three times in their past five games, by the Roosters, Warriors and last week the Titans, with big wins against the Sharks and Dragons splitting those defeats.

So we have two of the most hot-and-cold teams in the competition facing off in a sudden-death match.

Newcastle have won the past two matches between these teams, 20-12 last year and then 20-18 in round 10 this year. But those two wins came a streak of nine wins for the Rabbitohs.

The Rabbitohs get a boost in their pack this week with hard-hitting second-rower Jaydn Su’A back from a ban. Rangy back-rower Cameron Murray shifts back to to lock and Liam Knight is on the pine. Hame Sele is the player to exit the 17.

Newcastle regain second-rower Lachlan Fitzgibbon (groin) from injury, and Sione Mata’utia in back to the bench, with Brodie Jones out of the 17.

Rabbitohs v Knights free betting tips

Below our NRL betting expert has highlighted his free Souths-Newcastle betting tips for Sunday’s game.

Souths -8.5/match total over 44.5 points

This option is paying $3.25 with leading bookies Unibet Australia. The trend for the first week of finals has been for extremely high-scoring matches and that should continue here with two teams who like to shift the ball. We are banking on the South Sydney who flogged the Roosters to turn up, rather than the one which lost to the Dogs,

Damien Cook to score a try

The dynamic Rabbits hooker has been running into top form. He has only three tries this season so far but he generally steps up in big games for the Rabbits and NSW.

South Sydney Rabbitohs v Newcastle Knights prediction 4-10-2020

Souths go in as overwhelming favourites against the Knights, who have slipped a little off the pace in the past few months. But they do have a match-winner in Kalyn Ponga at fullback and he is really one to watch here as arguably the best young player in the game. Souths will be looking for another huge game from five-eighth Cody Walker, who ran rings around the Roosters last weekend in the best match of his career. The like of Walker and try-scoring phenomenon Alex Johnson and a mobile young pack should ensure Wayne Bennett’s boys make it until week two of the NRL finals. Our Rabbitohs v Knights prediction: South Sydney by 10 points.
