NRL round 13: Dragons v Broncos

Welcome to our Gold Coast Titans v Brisbane Broncos match preview, prediction and odds update for their NRL clash at Cbus Super Stadium, Gold Coast, on Friday, March 19.

This is a match that would have been circled in the calendar of many league fans given the defection of Broncos rising star David Fifita to derby rivals the Titans at the end of last season.

The arrival of firebrand Fifita and fellow young tyro Tino Fa’asuamaleaui from the Melbourne Storm has raised Titans hopes that they will break into finals football this season.

But their first-round effort against the New Zealand Warriors was disappointing in a 19-6 loss in Gosford and they need to react quickly to get their season headed in the right direction.

It’s fortunate for them they meet the struggling Broncos, who were brave in their 24-16 loss to the Parramatta Eels but fell away in the second half, partly thanks to injuries suffered in that clash but also because they were simply overpowered by the Eels pack.

The Titans have won four of their past six matches against the Broncos, including their two meetings last season: 18-6 at home and 30-12 earlier in the season at Suncorp Stadium.

The earlier match in the NRL Friday double is New Zealand Warriors v Newcastle Knights from Central Coast Stadium from 6pm, with the Knights going in as hot favourite.

Titans v Broncos team news for round 2

Broncos prop Matt Lodge (hamstring) is out for an extended period after suffering the injury in the first round, with young Thomas Flegler likely to come off the bench into the starting side to replace him, with Rhys Kennedy coming on to the bench.

The loss of Lodge comes at in inopportune time for the Broncos with hulking young prop Payne Haas still on the sidelines thanks to suspension.

They did have some good news though with winger Xavier Coates (neck) and ball-playing prop John Asiata (neck/shoulder) cleared to play.

Titans centre Brian Kelly suffered a broken hand in the match with the Warriors. Kelly is replaced at centre by Phillip Sami.

Broncos +6.5 points/match total under 41.5

The heavy rain forecast for the Gold Coast this week seems likely to turn this match into more of a slog. The Broncos appear the lighter side on paper but they really do have a point to prove in this one, and to be frank the Titans were woefully underwhelming in their season opener. Get on quickly before Unibet adjusts the unders/overs betting with all the raining arriving!

Anthony Milford First Half Number of Tries

This unique option with promising Australian bookies TopSport allows you to bet on how many tries a player will score in the first half. For Milford the options are 0 tries ($1.05), 1 try ($9.50), 2 tries ($81), 3+ tries ($501). We will have a small wager on Milford to score one try in the first half. He looked in a great shape in the first match against the Eels and is the sort of player who has little trouble wrong-footing defenders when the ground is dry, let alone in the rain. If he does happen to score a try early, you can always then hedge the bet by phoning a bookie (you can’t do it online as in-game internet is not allowed in Australia) and backing him to score another try in the first half!

Gold Coast Titans v Brisbane Broncos prediction 19-3-2021

As a neutral fan there is a lot to like about this game and plenty of questions to be answered. Will the Titans’ young forward recruits quickly become the powerhouse pair they are expected to be? Can the Broncos start the long climb back towards to the top of the league under Kevin Walters? While the rain may make it tricky for the respective back-lines, there is no doubt this will be a brutal battle up front with plenty of feeling. The Titans are at home and have a good recent record against their ”Big Brother”, but it’s hard to tip them with much confidence. Our Titans v Broncos prediction: Titans by 1 point.
