The Raiders-Eels match is the pick of the NRL Super Saturday fare, with the earlier matches Manly v Gold Coast Titans from Glen Willow Oval, Mudgee, from 3pm and South Sydney v Wests Tigers from Stadium Australia at 5.30pm.

Parramatta face a big task, but they have already shown this season they can match it with the best, having rolled defending premiers Melbourne Storm.

The Eels have not won in Canberra since 2006 but they have won the past two meeting between the sides, including 25-24 in their only clash in 2020, in round 7.

Canberra have won five of the past seven against Parramata, dropping only the two most recent match-ups.

But worrying for Parra is that they have scored a grand total of two points in their past two outings at GIO Stadium, an icy graveyard for visiting teams when the Raiders are up and about.

Raiders v Eels team news for round 6

The good news for Canberra is that star hooker Josh Hodgson (hip) has been given the all-clear to play but they have suffered a hefty injury blow at the back.

Fullback Charnze Nicholl-Klokstad (neck) is expected to miss about 10 weeks with a bulging disc suffered in the loss to the Panthers last weekend. Caleb Aekins is the Raiders’ new fullback.

Former Storm centre Curtis Scott (ribs) is ready to return for the Raiders, with Sebastian Kris going back to the reserves.

Veteran Raiders prop Ryan James has been rested this week, while Joseph Tapine is back at lock and Emre Guler joins the bench.

The Eels must make do without five-eighth Dylan Brown, who was suspended one game for a crusher tackle. Will Smith comes into the No.6 jersey.

Second-rower Ryan Matterson (concussion) has again been named to resume but the Eels have played it safe with him. If he does return, Isaiah Papali’i is the man to make way and move to the bench.

Below our NRL betting expert has highlighted his free Canberra-Parramatta betting tips for Saturday’s game.

Eels to win/match total under 36.5 points

This double is paying around $3.70 with leading Aussie bookmaker TopSport. The Eels can be a brutal side when they set their mind to it and they should make life very difficult for the Raiders, who will feel the absence of attacking fullback Charnze Nicholl-Klokstad.

Blake Ferguson to score 2+ tries

The veteran winger has struck a purple patch of scoring form. Last season, Ferguson was in a huge drought but this season the majority of the Eels’ attack is headed out to his flank. Expect more of the same from the Eels, and credit to Ferguson as he is in great shape this year.

Canberra Raiders v Parramatta Eels prediction 17-4-2021

This one will have a finals-like intensity as both these teams have serious designs on winning the title in 2021. The Eels have been good the past few seasons before falling short in the finals, while the Raiders made the decider in 2019 and were unlucky in that match against the Roosters. Last season was a write-off as injuries curtailed Canberra’s campaign. Both these teams are in pretty good shape early this year but we will go with the Eels for the upset as their pack is an absolute powerhouse and provides a lot of second-phase ball for the speedy types behind them. Our Raiders v Eels prediction: Parramatta by 2 points.
