NRL Thursday: Broncos v Cowboys betting tips, prediction & odds, round 20, 2020

NRL round 13: Dragons v Broncos

Welcome to our Brisbane Broncos v North Queensland Cowboys match preview, prediction and odds update for their NRL clash at Suncorp Stadium on Thursday, September 24.

How the mighty have fallen. It was only five years ago that these teams played off in a grand final (won 17-16 by the Cowboys) and they have staged plenty of epic matches in the past decade.

Heading into this final-round match the Broncos are last on the ladder and the Cowboys are third-last, and they are clearly the two worst defensive teams in the league in 2020.

It’s a big game for the Broncos, who need a win here to avoid winning the wooden spoon for the first time in the club’s proud history.

The Broncos have won five of the past six matches between these teams, including their meeting in Townsville earlier this year 28-21 in round one.

And in fairness, the Cowboys are probably to only team you would give the Broncos any chance of beating on recent form, as the second-last placed Canterbury have been hugely competitive of late.

The Cowboys are boosted by the return from suspension of energetic prop Josh McGuire, along with ball-playing prop John Asiata. Emre Pere and Ben Condon make way for the experienced pair. For McGuire it’s a chance to push his Origin claims.

The Broncos have lost Tyson Gamble (head knock) and departing star David Fifita (ankle) to injury, with Jesse Arthars coming in at centre, prop Payne Haas back after a week away for personal leave and Jordan Riki back from a suspension in the second row. Regular centre Kotoni Staggs shifts to five-eighth. Young winger Xavier Coates has been preferred to Corey Oates, who was named on the pine.

Broncos v Cowboys free betting tips

Below our NRL betting expert has highlighted his free Broncos-Cowboys betting tips for Thursday’s game.

Broncos to win/match total over 45.5 points

It’s tough to tip a team with 10 consecutive losses in any match, but the fact the Broncos are on home turf at least gives them a chance against a team which has not performed much better this season. The weather is clear and hopefully we will see some attacking football.

Kyle Feldt first try-scorer at $9

The Cowboys winger has been a shining light for his team, somehow managing 16 tries from 19 games to be second in the NRL try-scorers list this season behind only David Nofoaluma from the Wests Tigers. That tells us that he’s clearly the most likely threat from either side. It’s also worth checking on game day what he is paying for multiple tries as the market had not been set at the time of writing. We can see him scoring at least two.

Brisbane Broncos v Nth Qld Cowboys prediction 24-9-2020

Both teams will be relieved their miserable 2020 seasons are all but over. Both proud clubs have struggled and eventually parted way with their coaches. The Broncos will be desperate to get out of last spot, and they have performed a little better in recent weeks. The inclusion of powerhouse Payne Haas should give them a real lift. Our Broncos v Cowboys prediction: Broncos by four points.
