Souths, of course, deserve to be hot favourites as they seek a fourth win on the bounce, while the Broncos are languishing in 12th spot on the ladder and are conceding points far too easily.

These teams met twice last season, with the Broncos surprisingly winning the first meeting 22-18 in round two at Suncorp Stadium; wins have been few and far between since then.

In their most recent encounter the Rabbitohs won 28-10 at Stadium Australia in round 13, 2020, and they have won three of their past four matches against the Brisbane side.

Rabbitohs v Broncos team news for round 5

South Sydney have been forced into a couple of changes because of suspensions. Star five-eighth Cody Walker (striking) and back-rower Keaon Koloamatangi (crusher tackle) have been banned by the judiciary.

Veteran playmaker Benji Marshall steps out of his usual bench role to take the No.6 jersey, while Jacob Host starts in place of Koloamatangi. Utility Dean Hawkins makes his Rabbitohs debut off the pine.

The Broncos have their own suspensions woe, with second-rower Patrick Carrigan (crusher tackle) rubbed out for one match, while centre Herbie Farnworth (shoulder) has been ruled out with injury.

Richie Kennar replaces Farnworth, while Tevita Pangai jnr starts in place of Carrigan.

South Sydney Rabbitohs v Brisbane Broncos prediction 8-4-2021

The Broncos did not win a game in Sydney in 2020 and we don’t expect they will buck the trend here. They have looked good at time in attack but they don’t seem to be able to shut things down in defence when the momentum is against them. They scored first against the Storm last week and looked in the game, but in the space of 15 minutes it was all over as they were torn apart. Broncos coach Kevin Walters can expect no mercy from his mentor Bennett here. Souths are a weakened side with Cody Walker sitting in the stands but they still have plenty of firepower and should win this comfortably. Our Rabbitohs v Broncos prediction: Souths by 12 points.
