Oklahoma bans Sweepstakes casinos

Oklahoma has become the latest US state to prohibit dual-currency sweepstakes casinos, with legislation targeting operators and their commercial partners taking effect on November 1.

Senate Bill 1589 expands the state’s existing gambling laws to cover online casino-style games involving virtual currencies that can be exchanged for cash, prizes or other rewards.

The legislation specifically targets the dual-currency model used by sweepstakes casinos, which typically offer separate virtual currencies for entertainment and prize-based gaming.

Businesses found operating or supporting prohibited games face Class C2 felony charges.

The law extends liability beyond casino operators to gaming suppliers, platform providers, geolocation services, promoters and media affiliates.

Convictions carry fines ranging from $500 to $2,000, alongside potential imprisonment under Oklahoma law.

Governor Kevin Stitt vetoed the legislation in May, raising concerns about its scope, but lawmakers subsequently overrode his decision.

The measure includes exemptions for authorised charitable gaming and gambling conducted on tribal lands under federal law.

Several sweepstakes casino operators announced plans to withdraw from Oklahoma ahead of the implementation date.

The legislation adds further pressure on sweepstakes businesses as US states increasingly move to restrict the sector.
