Purton set to partner Grafterburners in Doomben 10,000
Hong Kong champion jockey Zac Purton has been granted permission to leave his riding commitments to partner Grafterburners in the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 in Brisbane on May 16, in a major boost to trainer Kelly Schweida’s chance of landing one of Australia’s key sprint races.
Grafterburners has surged into contention in early Doomben 10,000 betting, now trading around $6.00, placing him on the second line of the market behind favourite Jimmysstar at $4.50.
Jokers Grin and Napoleonic are also prominent at $6.00 with Australian betting sites, while Lady Of Camelot ($7.00) and Splash Back ($8.00) round out a tightly packed field. The market support for Grafterburners has coincided with the confirmation of Purton’s booking, with punters quick to react to the involvement of one of the world’s leading riders.
Purton will make a quick turnaround, returning to Hong Kong racing immediately after the race to fulfil his engagements at Sha Tin on May 17.
The Doomben 10,000 forms part of the 2026 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, which runs from May 2 to July 4 and features 10 weeks of racing and more than $28 million in prize money. The carnival is headlined by the $3 million Stradbroke Handicap on June 13, the premier race of the Queensland season.
