Randwick racing tips for April 18
It’s the final of the Sydney autumn carnival but that does not mind we are going out with a whimper. All Aged Stakes day features a couple of group 1s and paricularly a couple of promising types that will be tackling group races in Brisbane soon or later this year in the spring carnival.
We have run the rule over the fields for the best races of the day, including the group 1 Champagne Stakes and All Aged Stakes, and hopefully have found a couple of winners for our followers.
After a great first day of The Championships, we just missed with Lady Shenandoah last Saturday, but it’s been a profitable few weeks nonetheless.
Read on for your free Randwick guide and tips to some of the best racing in Australia this weekend.
Race 4
Mostyncopper James H B Carr Stakes (1400m)
Plaintiff (1) is an extremely promising filly which was ultra impressive last start in rounding up the field from the rear to win the group 3 PJ Bell over 1200m and she should be suited stepping up to 1400m. She is so far living up to her massive price tag of $2.2 million with four wins from as many starts. She is well drawn here and should not need to get quite as far back. It’s her biggest test to date, conceding weight to all rivals, but she is shaping as an exceptional type. The biggest danger may be (7) Horseshoe Hill, if you can forgive her run behind Plaintiff last start when things did not go quite right. (10) Snitzel Dancer is drawn the rails and has potential, while (4) Tomato Toastie will be hitting the line well. Don’t leave her out of your trifectas.
Rupert McIntosh tips: 1,7,10,4. Best bet: Plaintiff to win, but is short. Maybe stand it out in trifectas/quinellas.
Race 5
Toyota Forklifts Frank Packer Plate (2000m)
As is so often the case in Sydney feature races, the powerful Chris Waller stable has a strong hand. In this group 3, Waller has four runners and the trick is finding the bes of them. We think (9) Monopolistic could be the one at his third run back from a spell after a couple of decent efforts. This looks the right distance and he looks a great each-way chance if he can slot across one-off the fence from gate seven. He will likely roll forward for Adam Hyeronimus. The favourite (1) Matias, from the Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou stable, should be right in the finish from a perfect gate two. We also give solid chances to two more Waller runners in (2) Providence and (7) Pictor. This field is packed with upside and is worth watching to see what will emerge as a likely big-race winner down the track.
Rupert McIntosh tips: 9,7,1,2. Best bet: Monopolistic each-way in a tough, open race.
Race 7
Group 1 Moet & Chandon Champagne Stakes (1600m)
The Waller stable again looks dominant here with the two Snitzel colts, (1) Campione D’italia and (2) Fireball. They ran first and third in th group 1 ATC Sires’ and it would be no surprise to see them fight out the finish here. Both look as though they will relish 1600m. Smart filly (10) Miss Chanel split them in the Sires’ but she has again drawn poorly in 12 and will probably be well back on the turn. She is also a maiden after six starts though her turn will undoubtedly come. Southend (4) is an unbeaten colt by Palace Pier which brings a different formline and it will be interesting to see how he measures up. (5) Diameter is another Waller runner and should not be far from the action..
Rupert McIntosh tips: 1,2,5,4. Best bet: 1-2 quinella.
Race 8
TAB Hall Mark Stakes (1200m)
This is a fascinating edition of this race despite the scratching of star former West Australian galloper (3) Jokers Grin, which is now in the Waller stable. The Maschino gelding has won nine of 13 starts for Bernie Miller, and is now being tested on the east coast. Jokers Grin is now likely to be kept in reserve for the Queensland carnival. He was the early favourite for the race ahead of evergreen sprinter (1) Private Eye and the speedy (4) Mazu. (8) Kerguelen has a powerful finishing burst on his day and may be the one to swoop late.
Rupert McIntosh tips: 1,8,4,11. Best bet: Private Eye is super fresh and he will do us each-way.
Race 9
Group 1 Schweppes All Aged Stakes (1400m)
This is a cracking race to round out the group 1s for the Sydney autumn, and contains luminaries such as former Everest winner (1) Giga Kick, which showed he’s back to his best with a surging second in the T.J. Smith, and Melbourne Cup winner (5) Half Yours. It’s a wide-open $1.5 million event, and defending champion Jimmysstar ($4.80) looks to repeat history, arriving third-up and primed though he has to deal with gate 12. Waller’s Angel Capital ($4.60), who has the services of McDonald, is challenging Jimmysstar for favouritism. (14) Beiwacht and (6) Pericles offer strong 1400m credentials in what shapes as a tactical, high-speed series finale. (11) Fangirl is something of a forgotten star and the mare has an outstanding fresh record and at this trip.
Rupert McIntosh tips: 11,1,8,6 . Best bet: Fangirl to swamp them late each-way around $10 with Australian betting sites.
