Sri Lanka vs West Indies predictions

Here are our ICC World Cup predictions for Sri Lanka v West Indies being played at The Riverside Durham, Chester-le-Street, on Monday. Our Cricket World Cup betting expert examines the teams and seeks out some value wagers.

Sri Lanka’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals might have ended with their disappointing loss in the crucial match on Friday against the South Africans.
The former ICC World Champions breathed life into their campaign with the shock win against hosts England, with veterans such as Lasith Malinga and Angelo Mathews rolling back the years but they failed to fire against the Proteas.
The West Indies have been good in patches but they fell to another loss on Thursday to the Indian juggernaut.

That means they have just one win to their names against five losses, an extreme disappointment for a team that went in with high hopes. They will want to finish with a bang against Sri Lanka and then Afghanistan on Thursday, with players such as Chris Gayle likely to be playing in their final 50-over World Cups.
As always, it is worth checking the site of our preferred cricket bookie William Hill on the eve or day of the match to get the latest enhanced odds offering.

v Bangladesh: Shai Hope 96
v England: Nicholas Pooran 63
v South Africa: Match abandoned

Top batter prediction: It is an indictment on the West Indies’ batting they don’t have a single player averaging even 40 in this tournament. Their best run-scorer has been Nicholas Pooran, making 191 runs at a tick over 38. We will give the ‘Universe Master’ Chris Gayle one last chance to strike gold for us. He is well overdue and the Sri Lankan attack does not boast the extreme pace that has troubled Gayle so much in this series. For Sri Lanka, we have liked the way Kusal Perera has struck the ball so we will predict him to top score with some confidence at $4.50. He was also our selection against South Africa and he got half the job done, equal top-scoring with Avishka Fernando.

TOP WICKET-TAKER BETTING:

Sri Lanka:
Top five in betting: Lasith Malinga $3.50, Suranga Lakmal $4.50, Isuru Udana $5, Jeffrey Vandersay $5, Jeevan Mendis $5.50.

Top wicket-takers from past five ODIs:
v South Africa: Lasith Malinga 1-47
v England: Lasith Malinga 4-43
v Australia: Isuru Udana 2-57, Dhananjaya de Silva 2-40
v Bangladesh: Match abandoned
v Pakistan: Match abandoned

West Indies:
Top five in betting: Sheldon Cottrell $4, Oshane Thomas $4.33, Kemar Roach $4.33, Jason Holder $4.50, Shannon Gabriel $4.50.

Top wicket-takers from past five ODIs:
v India: Kemar Roach 3-36
v New Zealand: Sheldon Cottrell 4-56
v Bangladesh: Oshane Thomas 1-52, Andre Russell 1-42
v England: Shannon Gabriel 2-49
v South Africa: Match abandoned

Top bowler tip: We think one of the West Indies’ problems this event has been the sameness of their attack. They have plenty of quicks but none who has repeatedly troubled the batsmen, along the lines of Jofra Archer for England or Mitchell Starc for Australia. Sheldon Cottrell has probably been the most difficult to handle, so he is our top Windies bowler prediction at $4. Lasith Malinga has bowled well the past two matches so we will have a small bet on the veteran slinger at odds of $3.50 with William Hill.

WGL best bets: Sri Lanka v West Indies

Each of our ICC World Cup betting previews will highlight some potential wins for punters, or where our cricket tipsters think there is value to be found.

Sri Lanka to win at $2.75

Not a particularly strong feeling that Sri Lanka will win; just that the $2.75 seems great value against a team that just can’t get over the line in the West Indies.

Chris Gayle man of the match $8

In for a penny, in for a pound! If the big man fires, he could rip the Sri Lanka attack apart for a big ton. Once he hits his stride there are few better sights in cricket than Gayle cutting loose. His big problem has just been surviving the early skirmishes. If he does, look out.

Sri Lanka v West Indies prediction

An interesting match but not much for either side to play for as they are both out of finals contention after the Sri Lankans, who we expected to struggle in this tournament, fell against South Africa on Friday. Be sure to check the weather forecast and the latest odds on the the William Hill website.
