Australian Open tennis quarter-final tips and odds update

Rafael Nadal will play a big role in Spain's chances at the ATP Cup

It’s Australian Open quarter-final time, with eight women and eight men left in the betting to win the year’s first grand slam.
We run the rule over the quarter-finals and predict how we see the tournament playing out as the cream rises to the top.
There have been few surprises on the men’s side with the big three of Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer all remaining in the hunt, if only just in the case of the latter.
They are the top three left in betting, with the consistent Dominic Thiem and talented Alexander Zverev looming as the biggest challengers, though Stan Wawrinka has the pedigree to bring down at least one of the big three.
Meanwhile, two of the top three women in the betting when the markets opened have fallen, with Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka first week casualties.
Our early selections have proved a mixed bag. Our long-shot selection in the men’s Roberto Bautista Agut fell in the third round, but our tip on the women’s side Petra Kvitova has firmed in from $23 to $6 and looks a great chance of going all the way, though she will have to break Australian hearts first as she plays world No.1 and crowd favourite Ash Barty in a quarter-final.
Read on to find our players to bet on at the 2020 Australian Open and other insights into who will win the title at Melbourne Park.

Value bets for Australian Open quarter-finals 2020

Stan Wawrinka at $19 to win the title

The Swiss has three grand slams to his name and that is no mean feat in the era of Nadal, Djokovic and Federer. They came in the 2014 Australian Open, 2015 French Open and 2016 US Open. Rivals know what he is capable of and reaching the quarters at Melbourne Park will certainly have the juices flowing. We suggest backing him at the big odds and also in the head-to-head match-up against Alexander Zverev.

Petra Kvitova to beat Ashleigh Barty at $2.10

As mentioned in our pre-tournament musing, we believe the Czech’s best tennis is the best in the women’s game now that Serena Williams is struggling to return to her absolute peak. She will have the crowd against her but Kvitova can be a clinical performer and we really believe she can go one better than last year when she lost in the final to Naomi Osaka.

Australian Open quarter-final predictions

We thought this might be the tournament where someone emerged to challenge the big three in the men’s event and in the case of Federer and to a lesser extent Nadal that has happened. But the wily Federer has found a way to advance though it would be a major surprise if he were to win the title. Djokovic has been sublime, and it’s hard to imagine him not reaching the final.
On the women’s side, as mentioned we believe Kvitova is the one to beat, though given the draw Romanian Simona Halep looks a great chance to make it to the final at least. Good punting.
