Australian racing tips

The Brisbane winter carnival moves over the road to Queensland racing headquarters at Eagle Farm this Saturday, and it steps up another notch with two Group 1 races including the Queensland Derby.

Not only is the derby an outstanding edition but with seven black-type contests on the card, the whole card features huge fields and is packed with quality betting races and plenty of outstanding racehorses and jockeys.

The Brisbane weather has not played ball with consistent rain for weeks, but a couple of fine days are forecast leading up to this meeting so fingers crossed the track will be in the slow range come race one at Eagle Farm.

Birdman landed the group 1 Doomen Cup last weekend, with Melbourne Cup winner Half Yours somewhat disappointing. Champion trainer Chris Waller and jockey James McDonald combined with Birdman and again team up for a strong hand in most of the features at the Farm.

Elsewhere there is plenty of other Australian racing to keep you entertained, with good meetings at Caulfield, Rosehill, Morphettville and Belmont. Read on for our free betting tips and analysis for the best racing in Australia on May 30.

Eagle Farm Race 4

Group 2 The Straight Sires’ Produce (1400m)

An old racing adage is to never back two-year-olds in the wet but we will have a crack anyway at this fascinating group 2 over the demanding Eagle Farm 1400m. There are unbeaten types from with Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane form so it’s hard to line up this race and there is a decent price available about whatever you like. The filly (15) I Am Dirty is backing up after winning impressively at Doomben last Saturday and if she reproduces that run should be right in the finish. I Am Dirty has drawn wide in gate 15 but jockey Rachel King is riding in good form and with the track wet if might not be as big a problem as usual as the filly has tactical speed. The run of (4) Martist last start was hard to miss as he charged home when second to another contender today in the unbeaten (1) Vantorix, who is three from three and will roll forward from gate seven. (2) Blind Raise is two from two in Melbourne and is another which should be on the speed, while (5) Stormy Marco won his only start at Hawkesbury and should be charging home, if he handles the likely wet track.

Rupert McIntosh tips: 4,15,2,5. Best bet: Martist each-way at around $10.

Eagle Farm Race 6

Group 3 Mullins Lawyers Fred Best Classic (1400m)

This is a cracking edition of the Fred Best Classic and it’s safe to sat that whatever runs well in this can be followed into the rest of the carnival and into the future with confidence. Of course, the wet track won’t be helpful for all of the three-year-olds but an illustration of the depth of the field is the fact the likes of (1) Grafterburners and (3) Beadman are at double figures here and two weeks ago were well in the betting in the Group 1 Doomben 10,000. (5) Brave Monarch is the early favourite and the gelding has been in outstanding form with five wins from only seven starts but he has yet to face a field with the depth of this one. (8) Navy Pilot returned in good style down south and the penny may have dropped with him. He could surprise from the inside gate if the runs open up when needed, while (6)
Wodeton is unreliable but has plenty of ability.

Rupert McIntosh tips: 3,8,5,7. Best bet: Beadman each-way but this may be a good race to box up your fancies in a quinella or trifecta.

Eagle Farm Race 7

Group 1 Sky Racing Queensland Derby (2400m)

The Group 1 is an extraordinarily open affair and quote rightly given the wet track and long distance for the immature gallopers. Waller holds a formidable hand in the big field, with McDonald on board (4) Providence, which looks a great chance despite only one win in 14 starts. The colt by Wootton Basset has been consistent and this might be his chance to break through on the big stage and really go on to even bigger things in the spring. Kiwi filly (18) Solid Gold has been rock solid in betting and challenged for favouritism. The stable is pretty sharp. Another Waller runner in (7) Monopolistic looks primed for the distance after a dominant victory at Gosford. (3) Different Gravy has been a little down on form but is by Irish stallion Ghaiyyath, and his progeny have had great success in the derbies here. They generally stay like a mother-in-law.

Rupert McIntosh tips: 4,3,18,1. Best bet: Providence each-way but maybe try boxing up a few in a trifecta.

Eagle Farm Race 8

Group 1 Ladbrokes Kingsford Smith Cup (1300m)

The Kingsford Smith Cup is the main lead-up to the Stradbroke Handicap, but given it’s a Group 1 worth $1 million, it’s a pretty big prize in its own right. It has also attracted a large and impressive field of sprinters, with 11 individual Group 1 winners. We were keen on Chris Waller’s brilliant mare (12) Fangirl first-up and she never got warm but this suits her even better. Best avoid her if the track is too wet though as she us unplaced in give tries on the heavy. Ciaron Maher’s progressive sprinter (1) Jimmysstar tops the market as the favorite and is suited by the long Eagle Farm straight. The only knock on him is he is developing a habit of charging home and giving off ”back me next time” vibes. He’s a class sprinter though. Local hero (2) Rothfire won at any old price last time, while veteran (3) Private Eye is still racing with zest at rising nine. (7) Transatlantic and (16) Napoleonic are other great chances in a race with plenty.

Rupert McIntosh tips: 7,12,1,16. Best bet: Each-way Transatlantic.
