Brisbane v Essendon betting tips, prediction & odds; AFL Rd 5 Preview 2021

Welcome to our Brisbane Lions v Essendon tips, prediction and odds analysis ahead of their AFL round 5 clash at the Gabba on Saturday night.

The Lions are exceptionally short at $1.28 to win, with the Bombers rank outsiders at $3.70, despite their promising form in recent weeks. The line has also been set at a tempting 24.5 points.

The clash will also mark former Bomber Joe Daniher’s first game against his old club, which is sure to add some spice to the contest given his family’s long history in the red sash.

The Lions last played on Saturday, when they were clearly outpointed by the Western Bulldogs by 19 points, with their defence struggling despite the match being played in terrible conditions in Ballarat.

The Bombers last played on April 8, when they were beaten by three points by Sydney, in a pulsating contest marked by the underdogs charging home and superstar forward Lance Franklin booting the sealer for the Swans

Brisbane has very few players on the injury list, with Cam Rayner ruled out for the season with a knee, while Dan McStay faces a fitness test.

Essendon has growing injury concerns despite their improved form with defender Mason Redman a chance to return from hamstring tightness. Dylan Clarke could play, but the likes of Jye Caldwell, Michael Hurley, Sam Draper and Dylan Shiel are still some time away from returning.

Brisbane v Essendon tips

Our AFL betting expert has cast their eye over the markets and found some value Brisbane v Essendon tips:

Zac Merrett to gather over 30 touches

Essendon midfielder Zac Merrett is getting plenty of headlines at the moment, largely because other clubs are circling the prolific midfielder as a free agency target. It has not impacted his form and he is the linchpin of the Bombers’ midfield. If he fires in this game, the Bombers can win.

Joe Daniher to kick 2+ goals

Daniher’s first outing against his former club is important for the Lions and he looms as a key player. The Lions’ attack has been somewhat impotent in 2021 and really struggled against the Bulldogs. The condition should suit Daniher in this one and the Bombers have no logical match-up to play on someone of his ability. The big concern on Daniher? His terrible kicking at goal.

Hugh McCluggage to get over 25 touches

Brisbane midfielder Hugh McLuggage was one of the few shining lights for the Lions against the Bulldogs and we think he can repeat the dose here, by getting 25 touches against the Bombers. McLuggage is offering some nice value at $1.72 to reach 25+ touches.

Brisbane Lions v Essendon Bombers prediction 17/4

We do not have much confidence in Brisbane at the moment, but they will surely beat the young Bombers at the Gabba. Without Brownlow Medal winner Lachie Neale firing on all cylinders, the Lions midfield lacks A grade talent, something the Bombers do have. This clash has got banana skin written all over it for punters and we’re happy to steer clear of betting on the outcome of this one. If you must, take the Bombers +24.5 . Our final Brisbane v Essendon prediction? Brisbane by 2 points.
