Electronic Shroff Cards being phased out of Hong Kong

The Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) will begin phasing out its Electronic Shroff Card (ESC) service at Off-Course Betting Branches as more customers switch to digital betting and payment platforms.

From August 24, ESC services at self-service terminals across all off-course branches will cease, with customers still able to use transaction counters for betting and fund transfers until those services are withdrawn from 2027.

The Club said only a small number of customers still use ESCs, with most now preferring the HKJC Classic 3-in-1 app and HKJC eWallet. Customers can deactivate their cards at any off-course betting branch and receive a refund of the HK$20 deposit.

ESC services will continue to operate at Sha Tin and Happy Valley racecourses.

The move reflects the rapid digitalisation of wagering in Hong Kong, where customers can already place horse racing, football and Mark Six lottery bets remotely through the HKJC’s online platforms and mobile apps, without needing to visit a racecourse or betting branch.

The Club has increasingly shifted investment towards digital services as online betting continues to grow.
