Melbourne v Fremantle betting tips, prediction & odds; AFL rd 16 preview

round 16 betting preview Demons v Dockers

Welcome to our Melbourne Demons v Fremantle Dockers betting tips, prediction and odds update for their AFL round 16 clash at Cazaly’s Stadium on Monday night.

The Demons are under immense pressure to perform after their dismal 21-point loss to the Sydney Swans in Cairns last Thursday night.

They needed that win to stay right in the mix for a top-eight berth and were completely outplayed by the young Swans; a loss against the Dockers will mean we can put a line through them for season 2020.

Meanwhile, Fremantle have had one extra day’s rest than the Demons after their 27-point loss to Richmond last Wednesday. The Dockers have been extremely competitive this season but have a real lack of scoring power.

Melbourne have won three of their past four matches against the Dockers, with a couple of those at Marrara Oval in Darwin where the conditions are somewhat similar to what we can expect in Cairns.

The Demons selection committee reacted savagely to their poor performance against the Swans with Oscar McDonald, Charlie Spargo, Mitch Brown and Josh Wagner all axed. Midfielder Angus Brayshaw (foot), veteran Nathan Jones (quad) and James Harmes (hamstring) are all out injured, with former top-line mid Jones possibly having played his last game for the club.

Into the Melbourne team come Michael Hibberd after an ankle injury, Aaron vandenBerg, Jayden Hunt and Braydon Preuss, along with youngsters Kysaiah Pickett, Toby Bedford, and Oskar Baker.

The Dockers field an unchanged line-up from their match against the Tigers.

Demons v Dockers tips

Our AFL betting expert has scoured the odds and found several value Demons v Dockers tips for Monday night’s game.

Demons -8.5 points/match total under 105.5 points

While we have long lost faith in the Demons playing consistent football, they surely must turn up for this game. The Dockers are an extremely low-scoring team and the weather forecast is not great so we lean towards the unders even though the 105.5 line is really at the low side. So it’s Melbourne comfortably for us in a low-scoring slog.

Taberner leading group goal scorer

Unibet is offering a market on leading goal scorer for a group that includes Melbourne’s Sam Weideman ($3.25), Bayley Fritsch ($4.50) and Jake Melksham ($5.50) and Freo’s Matthew Taberner ($3.60), Jesse Hogan ($6) and Michael Walters ($6.50). We will go with Taberner even though we expect a Melbourne win because the big guy is just about the only regular goal scorer in that group. He will nearly always chip in with at least a couple.

Christian Petracca first goal scorer

Petracca is one of the few good news stories for the Demons this season and we can see him getting his 100th match off to a flyer. Caution though, this is more of a novelty bet than something to load up on.

Melbourne Demons v Fremantle Dockers prediction 7/9/2020

We are not expecting a classic match here but this match still has great importance, especially for the disappointing Dees. Freo have also shown signs of improvement under Justin Longmuir, but they need to find a more regular avenue to goal. This one could be played in the wet so check the weather close to the match start. Our final Melbourne v Fremantle prediction? Demons by 21 points.
