NRL Saturday: Roosters v Knights betting tips, prediction & odds, round 18, 2020

NRL round 13: Dragons v Broncos

Welcome to our Sydney Roosters v Newcastle Knights match preview, prediction and odds update for their NRL clash at the SCG on Saturday, September 12.

The tri-colours have won seven of their past eight matches against the Knights but this is the first meeting in the 2020 season. Last year, the Knights won the first encounter 38-12 in Newcastle but the Roosters paid them back with interest just seven weeks later, winning 48-10 at the SCG.

This is easily the most important match of the day, with the Roosters sitting in fourth while the sixth-placed Knights have an outside chance of bursting into the top four but also would be keen to finish as high as possible to earn a home final.

The earlier matches on Saturday are St George Illawarra v Canberra Raiders from WIN Stadium, Wollongong, at 3pm and the south Queensland derby between the Gold Coast Titans and Brisbane Broncos from Cbus Super Stadium, Gold Coast, at 5.30pm.

The Knights haven lost their major attacking spark for this clash with the decision to rest superstar fullback Kalyn Ponga, who have been knocked around in recent matches. Mitch Barnett and Hymel Hunt are also out of the side, with promising young back Tex Hoy named at fullback, Edrick Lee on the wing, while Herman Ese’ese comes into the starting side at lock. Newcastle receive some encouraging news with prop Daniel Saifiti back after a knee problem.

Meanwhile, the Sydney Roosters have regained hooker Jake Friend after he missed last week’s win over Canberra because of a head knock. Freddy Lussick makes way for the tackling machine Friend. Sonny Bill Williams is again expected to be used off the bench.

Below our NRL betting expert has highlighted his free Sydney Roosters-Newcastle Knights betting tips.

Match total under 45.5 points

It’s not often you will see a price disparity like this one in a match between two teams sitting fourth and seventh on the table. But I guess that’s how important bookies think Kalyn Ponga is to his team’s chance of causing an upset. While we don’t think the Knights will win, we certainly can’t be taking $1.08 about the Roosters winning or conceding a 19.5 points start at $1.84. We will need to look elsewhere for value in this one. We will try in the unders in the match total betting as the very least the Knights will provide is stern defence.

Daniel Tupou to score 2 tries or more

The lanky winger has added another attacking string to the Roosters’ bow with his return from injury recently. Tupou is such an aerial threat and five-eighth Luke Keary knows just where to place his kicks to suit him. Tupou needs just two tries to join an elite club of those who have scored 100 NRL tries and there is every chance he will reach the mark in this match.

Sydney Roosters v Newcastle Knights prediction 12-9-2020

This is an important match for the Knights to hold firm against top-notch opposition and prove they can cause some damage once the finals start. The Roosters have been back as if unbeatable in this game and they do need to win so shore up their top-four spot. They are back close to their best line-up so they will take an awful lot of stopping and will be rock solid in defence. We expect the Roosters to win comfortably while making it extremely difficult for the visitors to score. Our Roosters v Knights prediction: Roosters by 18 points.
