St Kilda v GWS betting tips, prediction and odds; AFL round 18 preview 2020

Welcome to our St Kilda v GWS betting tips, prediction and odds analysis ahead of their AFL round 18 clash at the Gabba on Friday night.

The Giants must win this final-round game and hope results fall their way if they are to make the post-season, but they would already consider the year to be a failure.

St Kilda have been big improvers in 2020 under Brett Ratten and sit in seventh position, four points and a large chunk of percentage ahead of Melbourne and the Giants. Even a loss might not stop the Saints from reaching their first finals series since 2011.

The Giants have won their past two encounters against the Saints easily, but there is very little to read into this, given the Saints’ improvement and the Sydney team’s well-documented struggles following last year’s grand final humiliation.

GWS are coming off a five-point loss to Melbourne in a game they should have won on Saturday. They created a stir in the lead-up to that game by dropping skipper Stephen Coniglio.

The Saints last played on Thursday, September 10, when they were gutsy but fell short against the West Coast Eagles.

St Kilda are paying $1.74 to win this clash with GWS paying $2.10. The $1.90 line has been set at 4.5 points by Unibet for this clash, which appears to be a bit too narrow.

St Kilda have recalled key defender Jake Carlisle and midfielder Dan Hannebery, after a long stint out with serious hamstring problems, for the clash, with the pair given a chance to push their finals case. They will replace the injured Zak Jones and Nick Hind, in a match where they will be celebrating the 50th game of Rowan Marshall.

The Giants have recalled captain Stephen Coniglio after he was dropped because of poor form prior to last round. They have also added impressive young forward Jake Riccardi after he was rested last game. Running machine Lachie Whitfield will be playing his 150th game for the Giants.

St Kilda v GWS tips

Our AFL betting expert has scoured the odds and found several value Saints v Giants tips for Friday’s game.

Over/under betting tip

The Over/Under betting mark has been set at 120.5 at Unibet, with both options paying $1.90. The Giants’ only hope of playing finals is making up about three percentage points in beating the Saints well and hoping the Western Bulldogs and Melbourne are beaten. It’s unlikely they will play finals, but they may as well roll the dice and turn it into a shootout in an attempt to make up the percentage. We’re confident the match total will be well over 120.5 here as long as the conditions aren’t too dewy.

Toby Greene to get 20 touches and kick 2+ goals

Giants match-winner Toby Greene tends to play well in the big matches and fighting for your finals life is as big as it gets. Unibet runs a star player market, where they offer odds on certain players to achieve possessions and goals totals. Greene will be paying around the $4 mark to get 20 touches and kick two goals. Check odds at Unibet on game day.

First goal-scorer betting

St Kilda’s Dan Butler is always up and about early in games and has kicked the first goal several times this season. He is as good an option as anyone in this market and is paying $12. Unibet has some great promotions surrounding first goal-scorer betting from time to time.

St Kilda Saints vs GWS Giants prediction 18/9/2020

This is a hard clash to pick a winner in and could come down to whether the Giants believe they can reach the finals. GWS would be bitterly disappointed by their predicament, but they would be realistic about their horrid run of injuries and form issues. They will be confident of rebounding quickly next season, but do they have one more push left in them in 2020? St Kilda have fallen from their lofty top-four position earlier in the year and have been found out against some of the better teams. We genuinely are having trouble splitting these two and expect it to be tight in the finish. Our final St Kilda v GWS prediction? Giants by seven points.
