FIFA World Cup 2026 Group H Betting preview and tips

European champions Spain are overwhelming favourites to win Group H at the FIFA World Cup, with Luis de la Fuente’s side priced at 1.20 to top a section also featuring Uruguay, Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde.

La Roja are expected to qualify comfortably for the Round of 32 with international betting sites, but the presence of two-time world champions Uruguay gives Group H genuine heavyweight appeal.

Uruguay arrive with coach Marcelo Bielsa and star players Federico Valverde and Darwin Núñez, who is being chased by club team Barcelona, leading a dangerous side. Saudi Arabia bring World Cup experience and counter-attacking threat, while Cape Verde make their World Cup debut after a historic qualification campaign.

Uruguay are the second favourites to win Group H at 5.00 and look the clear danger to Spain. Bielsa’s side have elite midfield power, aggressive pressing and enough attacking quality to make their final group match against Spain one of the standout games of the opening round.

Saudi Arabia are priced at 41.00 to win the group and 2.40 to qualify, leaving the Green Falcons as the main outsiders trying to force their way into the Round of 32. Their best chance may come in the final match against Cape Verde.

Cape Verde are the longest-priced team in Group H at 67.00 to win the section and 3.60 to qualify, but simply reaching the World Cup is already a landmark achievement. The Blue Sharks topped their CAF qualifying group and will be dangerous if underestimated.

Lets take a deep dive into each Group H team’s prospects, including their coaches, past World Cup results, predicted lineups and much more.

Group H Squads, qualifying, odds and more

🇪🇸 Spain

  • Manager: Luis de la Fuente
  • Captain: Rodrigo Hernández Cascante
  • Group H winner odds: 1.20
  • Qualify Group H odds: 1.005

Spain are the clear team to beat in Group H and one of the leading contenders to win the World Cup, with the European champions boasting a two year winning streak on the international stage. De la Fuente’s side combine the technical control expected of Spain with more direct wide threat through Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams. Pedri, Rodri, Gavi, Martín Zubimendi and Fabián Ruiz give La Roja one of the strongest midfield groups in the tournament, while Mikel Oyarzabal, Dani Olmo and Ferran Torres provide flexible attacking options. Yamal is a player to watch, with the young Barcelona superstar still only 18, and an absolute weapon on the right for both club and country. The Group H draw is not simple because Uruguay are a genuine threat, but Spain should still control the group if they handle their first two games professionally.

🇺🇾 Uruguay

  • Manager: Marcelo Bielsa
  • Captain: Federico Valverde
  • Group H winner odds: 5.00
  • Qualify Group H odds: 1.08

Uruguay head into a World Cup for the first time in nearly 20 years without their legendary leading goal-scorer Luis Suárez and Edinson Cavani, who have both retired from international football. Uruguay are the clear danger to Spain and look one of the strongest second favourites in any World Cup group. Bielsa has given La Celeste an aggressive identity built around pressing, intensity and quick attacking transitions. Federico Valverde is the engine of the side, Darwin Núñez gives Uruguay a powerful focal point and Ronald Araújo, José María Giménez and Mathías Olivera provide defensive quality. Uruguay’s first match against Saudi Arabia is important, because three points there would likely set up a final-day shootout with Spain for top spot. If Bielsa’s side click, they have enough quality to beat anyone in Group H. A fun fact about Uruguay is that they have four stars on their jersey, indicating four World Cup wins, despite having officially only won two — 1930 and 1950. The other two stars acknowledge La Celeste winning the Olympic Games in 1924 and 1928 prior to the World Cup’s inception.

🇸🇦 Saudi Arabia

  • Manager: Georgios Donis
  • Captain: Salem Al Dawsari
  • Group H winner odds: 41.00
  • Qualify Group H odds: 2.40

Saudi Arabia face a difficult draw, but the Green Falcons are not without hope. Their famous win over Argentina in 2022 showed they can trouble elite opposition when they are organised, brave and clinical in transition. Salem Al Dawsari remains their most recognisable attacking threat, while Firas Al Buraikan and Saleh Al Shehri give them forward options. The concern is that Spain and Uruguay both have the technical quality and physical intensity to control long periods of the match. Saudi Arabia’s best route to progression may be taking something from Uruguay or Spain, then beating Cape Verde in the final round and hoping that is enough to qualify. Despite this somber outlook the Green Falcons are playing at their third consecutive World Cup appearance and the game has never been as healthy in the Kingdom, which will host the 2032 World Cup, which will see them become the first nation to host the event solo in its expanded 48 team format.

🇨🇻 Cape Verde

  • Manager: Bubista
  • Captain: TBC
  • Group H winner odds: 67.00
  • Qualify Group H odds: 3.60

Cape Verde are the great story of Group H. The Blue Sharks are making their World Cup debut after topping their CAF qualifying group and edging out Cameroon, giving the island nation one of the most important sporting moments in its history. Bubista’s side are outsiders, but they are not a novelty team. Cape Verde were built on organisation, defensive discipline and belief during qualification, with experienced players such as Vozinha, Ryan Mendes, Garry Rodrigues and Jamiro Monteiro joined by a broader group playing across Europe and beyond. Spain and Uruguay look too strong on paper, but the final match against Saudi Arabia gives Cape Verde a clear target. Cape Verde have captured football fan’s imagination after qualifying outright via their African group, finishing ahead of footballing giant Cameroon after proving unbeatable at Estádio Nacional in their capital city of Praia.

🇪🇸 Spain v 🇨🇻 Cape Verde

(Spain should start Group H with a statement win)

Spain open against the lowest-ranked team in the group and will be expected to dominate possession from the first whistle. Cape Verde are organised and have earned their place at the tournament, but this is an enormous step up against a team with elite midfield control and world-class wide talent. La Roja will want to build goal difference before facing Saudi Arabia and Uruguay. Cape Verde’s best chance is to defend deep, stay compact and turn the match into a low-scoring contest for as long as possible.

🇸🇦 Saudi Arabia v 🇺🇾 Uruguay

(Played once at a World Cup in 2018, wth Uruguay winning 1-0)

Uruguay should have too much quality, but Saudi Arabia are capable of making this uncomfortable. Bielsa’s side will press high and look to overwhelm the Green Falcons physically, while Saudi Arabia will likely look for counter-attacking moments through Salem Al Dawsari and their front line. Uruguay’s midfield edge is significant, especially if Valverde, Bentancur and Ugarte control the tempo. A win here would put La Celeste in a strong position before their Cape Verde match and final-day showdown with Spain. These two nations have played three times in history, with both teams winning once and a draw.

🇪🇸 Spain v 🇸🇦 Saudi Arabia

(Spain’s patience against Saudi Arabia’s defensive shape)

Saudi Arabia will need to be disciplined and brave without the ball, because Spain should control territory and possession. The Green Falcons have shown before that they can shock elite opponents, but repeating that against this Spanish side will be difficult. Spain’s wide players can stretch the field, while their midfield should be able to pin Saudi Arabia back for long spells. If La Roja score early, this could become a comfortable match. If Saudi Arabia keep it tight, they have enough counter-attacking threat to make Spain work. Spain and Saudi Arabia have played three teams, with the Spanish winning all of them, the most recent being a 5-0 friendly victory in 2012.

🇺🇾 Uruguay v 🇨🇻 Cape Verde

(Uruguay’s intensity could be hard for Cape Verde to handle)

This is the game Uruguay will expect to win if they are going to set up a proper group decider against Spain. Cape Verde are capable of staying organised, but Bielsa’s pressing and Uruguay’s physical edge could make this a difficult match over 90 minutes. Darwin Núñez will be a major threat if Uruguay can create space behind the defence, while Valverde’s running power can break open the midfield. Cape Verde need to stay alive from set pieces and avoid giving Uruguay the kind of transition game they want.

🇨🇻 Cape Verde v 🇸🇦 Saudi Arabia

(The battle to avoid bottom spot could still matter)

This could decide who finishes third in Group H and may even carry Round of 32 implications if one of these sides has picked up a surprise result earlier in the group. Saudi Arabia have more World Cup experience and should be better equipped for the moment, but Cape Verde will see this as their most realistic chance to make history. The Blue Sharks need to stay compact and make the most of any set pieces or transition chances. Saudi Arabia’s experience and attacking options give them the slight edge.

🇺🇾 Uruguay v 🇪🇸 Spain

(The Group H blockbuster and likely battle for first place)

This is the marquee match of Group H and could feel more like a knockout fixture than a group-stage game. Spain will try to dominate possession through midfield, while Uruguay will look to press, disrupt and turn the match into a high-intensity contest. Yamal, Pedri and Nico Williams give Spain creativity and width, but Uruguay’s midfield power and defensive aggression make them dangerous. If both teams win their opening two matches, this will decide top spot. Spain are favourites, but Uruguay are more than capable of taking points. Uruguay and Spain have not played since the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup, with Spain winning 2-1. Remarkably the two nations have played 10 times for five Spanish wins and five draws.

World Cup Group H prediction & best bets

Spain are the obvious pick to win Group H. Their squad is deeper, more balanced and more technically secure than the rest of the section, and they should be able to take maximum points from matches against Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia before facing Uruguay.

Uruguay are the clear second pick and look short enough in the qualification market for good reason. Bielsa’s team should have enough quality to beat Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde, and their final match against Spain could decide whether they finish first or second.

The most logical Group H order is Spain first, Uruguay second, Saudi Arabia third and Cape Verde fourth. Saudi Arabia have the better chance of forcing their way into the knockout phase as a third-placed team, but Cape Verde are dangerous enough to make that final match uncomfortable.
