AFL round 2 odds and fixture
Reigning premier Richmond will restart the COVID-19 impacted AFL season on Thursday night when they start heavy favourite against Collingwood at the MCG.
While there has been much debate about whether the premiership should be awarded in 2020, the AFL has opted to push on with the season, even though the quarters have been shortened for the June 11 restart, which features a redone schedule for round 2.
The Tigers, who have a clean bill of health, have been installed $1.34 favourites to defeat the Magpies ($2.30), who have been hit by key injuries to Adam Treloar (calf) and Mason Cox (knee).
On Friday night Geelong ($1.52) will go into their clash against Hawthorn ($2.54) as heavy favourites with the two fierce modern-day foes playing out some of the best contests in recent years.
On Saturday afternoon Brisbane ($1.29) will enter their clash against Fremantle expected to win, with their greater depth in the midfield, which is led by former Docker Lachie Neale, set to be the difference.
The Dockers ($3.50) will be sweating on the availability of key forward Cam McCarthy who suffered a worrying collapse at training during a non-contact drill, but star forward Jesse Hogan will be available.
Cellar dwellers Carlton and Melbourne will do battle in the twilight slot on Saturday, with the Demons the bookies’ favourite at $1.57 despite the Blues showing some positive signs against Richmond in round 1.
The South Australian derby will pit Port Adelaide ($1.41) and Adelaide ($2.85) against each other on Saturday night, with the Power dominating the betting against their bitter rivals, who will fancy their chances of causing an upset.
The final game on Saturday night will see the Gold Coast go up against West Coast, who are second favourite for the AFL flag, after the off-season recruitment of Geelong star Tim Kelly. The Eagles are as short as $1.08 with some bookmakers, while the Suns are as long as $6.50.
The early game on Sunday will see the GWS Giants and North Melbourne do battle, with the Sydney-based outfit favourite. The Giants have few injury concerns and the $1.36 on offer at Unibet on them beating the Roos still seems generous.
The Sydney Swans are slight favourites at $1.83 for their clash against Essendon at the SCG while St Kilda and the Western Bulldogs will close out round 2 of the AFL on Sunday evening from 6:05pm.
