AFL round 8 odds and fixture update

AFL finals week two: Geelong v Collingwood.

THE AFL odds for round 8 of the AFL season have been released, with the Gold Coast Suns being installed outsiders in the betting for Thursday night’s clash against the Western Bulldogs.

The Suns have been the COVID-19 feelgood story in the AFL, showing great improvement under third year coach Stewart Dew, sitting in sixth position after seven rounds.

The Bulldogs have been a poster-child for the unpredictable nature of the 2020 season, a huge win against Essendon on Friday night coming off a whipping against Carlton.

But despite this unpredictable form and the match being at Metricon Stadium, the bookies have priced the Bulldogs at $1.65 to win this clash, while the Suns are at $2.20.

On Friday night we’ll get a truer indication of both GWS and Richmond’s premiership credentials, with the grand final rematch sure to provide plenty of fireworks.

The Giants are the $1.68 favourites despite coach Leon Cameron admitting they were “some way off the top teams” this year, while Richmond ($2.20), who are going through a player availability crisis, keep winning despite fielding a team well below their best.

Out-of-form North Melbourne are the $2.41 outsiders for Saturday afternoon’s clash against Carlton, who have been priced at $1.55 to notch up their fourth victory of the year, after losing to Port Adelaide with a Robbie Gray goal after the final siren.

Two recent AFL powers, Sydney and Hawthorn, will do battle in the twilight slot on Saturday, with the Swans priced at $2.15 and the Hawks at $1.72 in head to head betting.

Port Adelaide ($1.39) are a short-priced favourite to defeat St Kilda ($2.92), with the top-of-the-table Power relieved after escaping against the Blues.

On Sunday, Essendon ($1.44) are expected to account for the rebuilding Adelaide ($2.71), with the latter still to play their round 7 game on Monday night.

In arguably the match-of-the-round, the West Coast Eagles are the $1.63 favourites to account for Collingwood ($2.25) after tuning up with five-goal victory against Fremantle in the Western Derby.

Melbourne ($2.63) will fancy their chances of causing an upset against premiership favourites Brisbane ($1.50), with the Demons playing their best game of the year against Hawthorn last weekend.

Round 8 of the AFL season will finish on Monday night, when Fremantle ($2.53) clash with Geelong ($1.53) from Optus Stadium in Perth. The Dockers are hopeful the extended break will give enough time for injured skipper Nat Fyfe to be declared fit.

AFL 2020 premiership betting update

The Brisbane Lions are the new premiership favourites at $6 with Unibet. The Lions firmed from $9 to $6 thanks to their impressive win over GWS at Giants Stadium, while news that the 2020 grand final could be played at the Gabba also no doubt contributed.

The loss sent the out-of-form Giants in the other direction, out from $7 to $10 to win the AFL flag, while Geelong were $10 to $13 after they were well held by Collingwood,

Further out in betting, Hawthorn were $31 out to $51 after they were thrashed by Melbourne, who were $51 into $34.
