Fremantle v Geelong tips, prediction and odds update; AFL Rd 18 Preview

Fremantle v Geelong betting tips for Thursday July 15 - AFL round 18 preview 2021

Welcome to our Fremantle v Geelong betting tips, predictions and odds update for their AFL round 18 clash at Optus Stadium, Perth, on Thursday night.

The seventh-placed Dockers have everything to play for in this contest, with it likely they will drop out of the top eight with a loss. Their opponent is in third position, but still faces a threat to their top four chances and will be keen to hammer home an advantage now.

Fremantle was impressive in its last outing against Hawthorn, winning by 62 points at the University of Tasmania on Saturday. The Dockers have improved markedly this year, with young stars on most lines, but the experienced Cats will prove another step up.

Geelong is coming off a 26-point win over Carlton, who had their chances to cause an upset, but could not kick straight. But the professional Cats, led by their usual suspects, kept calm and let the Blues throw away a victory, at one point kicking 11 straight behinds.

Australian bookmakers installed the Dockers as outsiders for this contest at $2.48 but they have come in to around the $2 mark, with Geelong’s starting price ($1.54) blowing out to around $1.80. The $1.90 line at Sportsbet was set at 10.5 early in the week, but is now at 2.5.

The Cats will will have to be cautious with a host of their veterans running into September, with the likes of Isaac Smith, Shaun Higgins and Tom Hawkins all the wrong side of 30. The Cats have lost speedster Gary Rohan to a corked leg, but they have regained captain Joel Selwood after he was rested against the Blues. Luke Dahlhaus has also been included after being rested last outing. Lachie Henderson and Max Holmes are also out of the line-up.

Fremantle is unlikely to regain anyone from injury, but luckily did not suffer any more in their victory over the Hawks. Young defender Ethan Hughes has earned a recall, with last week’s medi-sub Connor Blakely and Brandon Walker dropped. Forward Matt Taberner is still at least another week away from a return.

Fremantle v Geelong tips

Our AFL betting expert has cast their eye over the odds and found some value Fremantle v Geelong tips:

Esava Ratugolea to kick 3+ goals

Ratugolea played his best game in months in the Cats’ win over Carlton and he will be given even more exposure here, with Rohan not playing. We have seen in the past players like Taberner firing in the West and Ratugolea is not a dissimilar power forward. Expect him to get plenty of chances and the $26 on offer for him to kick 3+ goals is worth a small investment. Abandon this bet if Stanley goes out of the Cats line-up for any reason.

Josh Treacy to kick 2+ goals

Fremantle youngster Josh Treacy has turned heads since making his debut earlier this season. He runs straight and seems to have decent forward craft for a first year player. Treacy is also like to see plenty of chances, with regular full-forward Taberner out of action. He is paying $2.70 to kick 2+ goals with Playup

Possessions betting tips

Both of these teams have some players that are extraordinarily reliable in possessions betting. Geelong has Cam Guthrie and Tom Stewart who regularly pick up 30+ possessions, while Patrick Dangerfield is also beginning to hit his straps in 2021. The Dockers’ mainstays through the midfield are Nat Fyfe, David Mundy and Andy Brayshaw, who are all in the mix to reach 25 possessions each week. We are worried Dangerfield will spend the bulk of the night forward this round, because of their injuries, so we’ll take a double here with Guthrie and Fyfe both to reach 30 possessions, which is paying $4.50.

Fremantle Dockers v Geelong Cats prediction 15/7/2021

The Dockers are well and truly in the finals mix and will fancy their chances of knocking off the Cats in this contest, which would go a long way to sealing their top eight spot. Geelong without Jeremy Cameron and Rohan is a totally different proposition, with much more responsibility falling on to Tom Hawkins. We can see this clash being a low-scoring defensive slog, with the Dockers notorious for their slow play under Justin Longmuir. While we will avoid betting on the outcome directly, if you’re a Dockers fan you will be tempted to back your boys in at home. Our final Fremantle v Geelong prediction? Cats by three points.
