Geelong v Essendon betting tips, prediction an odds; AFL rd 16 preview

Welcome to our Geelong v Essendon betting tips, prediction and odds analysis ahead of their AFL round 16 clash at the Gabba on Sunday.

Geelong are the short-priced favourites to win this game, with bookies pricing them at around $1.25, while the Bombers are at $4 to cause an upset. The $1.90 line has been set at 21.5.

The Cats are sitting in fourth on the ladder and must win to to guarantee their position in the double chance zone for at least another few days, with the fifth-placed Eagles also due to play on Sunday.

Essendon’s finals hopes are slipping away and they are now six points adrift of eighth-placed GWS, with this probably their last chance to mount a charge.

Geelong are coming off a bye having last played on August 28 when they came from behind in a gutsy display to beat the Bulldogs by 11 points.

The Bombers last played on Tuesday when they fought all the way but ultimately lost by 15 points to the powerful Eagles, with this match marking the second game back for Joe Daniher.

Essendon have opted to rest Daniher, who has spent the better part of two years on the sidelines, and they have also been forced to leave out gun youngster Andrew McGrath. The pair have been replaced by Jacob Townsend and Mason Redman.

Geelong have lost Jack Steven for the clash to injury with young midfielder Lachie Fogarty called up for just his fifth game.

Geelong v Essendon tips

Our AFL betting expert has scoured the odds for some value and found several value Cats v Bombers tips for Sunday’s game.

Geelong to win by 1-24 points

The Cats, led by Tom Hawkins, have been one of the form teams of the last eight rounds and we expect their strong run to continue here against the Bombers. They look to be stronger on paper and much more organised in defence than the Bombers. But we can’t see them blowing away the willing Bombers and the 1-24 margin market at Unibet, paying $2.65 looks to be good value for your multibets.

Geelong Cats to win and over 116.5 match points

Similar to our last tip, but it’s a doubles market that allows you to also bet on the over/under total match points. Geelong to win and the total match points to be over 116.5 is paying $2.43 and we think this is almost a lock. Essendon are an attacking team but can leak goals when they make mistakes.

Geelong v Essendon prediction 6/9/2020

Geelong are among the favourites for the premiership, but many AFL fans are waiting for the September bomb. They look to be a better team this year, even without Tim Kelly, with their backline proving incredibly hard to break down this season. They also have match-winners like Patrick Dangerfield and Hawkins, who has gone to another level this season. Essendon were not disgraced against the Eagles and look a much better team when Daniher is up and running. But he’s out here and we just don’t think they can trouble a clinical Geelong. Our final Geelong v Essendon prediction? Cats by 14 points.
