NRL Friday: Roosters v Broncos betting tips, prediction & odds, round 16, 2020

NRL finals: Panthers v Roosters 2020

Welcome to our Sydney Roosters v Brisbane Broncos match preview, prediction and odds update for their NRL clash at the SCG on Friday, August 28.

We elected to preview this Friday match not because we think it will be overly competitive but simply just in fascination to how the once-mighty Broncos will respond to the events of this week.

The earlier match on Friday between 10th-placed St George Illawarra and 13th-placed Gold Coast Titans from Netstrata Jubilee Stadium at 6pm promises to be a closer affair, with the Dragons needing a win to stay in touch with the top eight.

But we are fascinated by the internal ructions at the Broncos, who are sitting in 15th spot on the table, have a terrible injury list and this week parted company with besieged coach Anthony Seibold. Assistant Peter Gentle will coach the Broncos until the end of the season.

To make matters worse, they come up against the two-time defending premiers who can’t afford any slip-ups and have finally regained captain Boyd Cordner from a long concussion break.

The Roosters also regain lanky winger Daniel Tupou from a long-term ankle injury, with Matt Ikuvalu and Daniel Fifita making way for Tupou and Cordner.

Meanwhile, the Broncos have suffered another injury blow with five-eighth Anthony Milford (hamstring) ruled out. Sean O’Sullivan comes in at five-eighth, with Cory Paix coming in as replacement for suspended hooker Issac Luke. Former Storm playmaker Brodie Croft is back on the pine.

Roosters v Broncos free betting tips

Below our NRL betting expert has highlighted his free Sydney Roosters v Brisbane betting tips.

Broncos +24.5 points/match total over 47.5

While we don’t think the Broncos can tread the regular path of teams that replace their coach and score a surprise win, the least they can do it is commit to a wholehearted effort and do better than expected. The 24.5-point line is the biggest we have seen this season. While the Roosters won 59-0 in Brisbane in a result that seemed to send the Broncos spiralling, we don’t expect this match to be that bad. This option is around $5.20 with Unibet.

Joseph Manu first try-scorer

The Roosters centre is rated by many as the best in the game. His opposite number Kotoni Staggs has been a rare highlight for the Broncos and the battle between these two should be a classic. Manu has far more support on his side. Worth a small investment to stamp his class on the match early.

Sydney Roosters v Brisbane Broncos prediction

Possibly this is a match to take in without dipping into your bankroll too heavily as it’s a little hard to predict what we will get from the Broncos. The one thing we know we won’t get from the Roosters is any sort of mercy for their old rivals. The Roosters are only clinging to fourth spot and they need to keep winning as they chase a hat-trick of NRL title. We think they will win without too many worries but maybe by slightly less than bookies think. Our Roosters v Broncos prediction: Sydney Roosters by 16 points.
