In the earlier matches on Saturday, bottom team the Bulldogs face struggling Canberra Raiders from 3pm, while Cronulla and injury hit South Sydney meet in the middle leg from 5.30pm.

The Roosters have won four of their past six matches against the Cowboys, and won 42-16 in their only meeting in 2020, in round nine.

The Cowboys won’t be cannon fodder though, as they have won four of their past five matches as they rebuild in the post-Thurston era. Those four wins came against teams outside the eight in the Tigers, Dogs, Raiders and Broncos, so the Roosters, even wounded as they are, represent another step up entirely.

Roosters v Cowboys team news for round 10

There is mixed news for the injury hit Roosters as they head to Brisbane for this clash. They lose one playmaker in Drew Hutchison (broken ribs, punctured lung) but are expected to regain another in Lachlan Lam, who has recovered from a knee injury.

Star young halfback Sam Walker (shoulder) is also in some doubt, as is NSW Origin hopeful lock Victor Radley (head knock), but back-rower Sitili Tupouniua returns from suspension.

The Cowboys have stuck with the 17 who escaped with a one-point win over arch rivals Brisbane Broncos last weekend, with captain Jason Taumalolo playing his 200th match for the club to give them a little extra motivation.

Roosters v Cowboys free betting tips

Below our NRL betting expert has highlighted free Roosters-Cowboys tips for Saturday night’s game.

Josh Morris to score 2+ tries

The Roosters might have lost one Morris brother in Brett to injury for the rest of the season, but the other remains and he is also a first-class try-scorer. The family just has the knack. We expect Josh Morris to be high up on the try-scorers list be season’s end too.

Cowboys +12.5 points/match total over 42.5

We can see an entertaining contest here and we don’t think the Roosters will be as dominant as many expect.

Sydney Roosters v Nth Qld Cowboys prediction 15-5-2021

The Roosters have been hit hard by injuries and retirements and it’s a testament to their depth that they are still near the pointy end of the table. But they have lost that aura of invincibility they have carried for a long while, and mid-table teams now believe they can crack their defence. The Cowboys are in a rebuilding phase and are not yet in the mix for a serious tilt at the title but they should be able to cause some headaches for the Tricolours. We think they will fall just short. Our Roosters v Cowboys prediction: Roosters to win by 4 points.
