NRL round 13: Dragons v Broncos

Read on for our St George Illawarra v New Zealand Warriors match preview, prediction and odds update for their NRL clash at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium, Sydney, on Sunday, April 18.

Coach Anthony Griffin has his Dragons firing to the surprise of many after they lost their opening match to their arch rivals Cronulla. The Dragons have won their past four matches to sit in the top four.

Meanwhile, the Warriors are languishing in 11th place with two wins from five matches, and suffered a heartbreaking 13-12 loss to Manly last weekend. They have been competitive in all matches this season, a credit to their adaptability given they are based far from home on the Central Coast of NSW.

New Zealand Warriors have won their past four matches against the Dragons, including an 18-0 win in round three last season in their only clash for 2020.

But this is a much more impressive Dragons outfit and the bookies have made them short-priced favourites to make it five wins on the bounce.

The later match on Sunday is a battle between two teams fighting to avoid the wooden spoon, with North Queensland hosting winless Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs at Queensland Country Bank Stadium.

Dragons v Warriors team news for round 6

The Dragons have named an unchanged 17 from the one that took care of the previously unbeaten Eels 26-12 last Sunday, though recent Cowboys recruit Josh McGuire has been named in the reserves.

Meanwhile the NZ team regains star back Peta Hiku after recovering from a knee. That’s timely as they have lost winger David Fusitu’a (hamstring), as well as second-rower Eliesa Katoa.

Marcelo Montoya (head knock) is in some doubt, while Bunty Afoa is back on the bench after serving a suspension. Josh Curran starts in the second row in place of Katoa.

Dragons v Warriors free betting tips

Our NRL betting expert has highlighted his free St George Illawarra-New Zealand betting tips for Sunday’s game.

NZ Warriors/Dragons Half-time/fulltime double

This bet requires the Warriors to lead at half-time before the Dragons win the match in normal time to be successful. We don’t think there is that much between these teams but the Dragons should be strong late and they have come through several tight matches with flying colours. The reason for this type of bet is to really add some value and this one is paying around $7 with TopSport.

Matt Dufty to score 2 tries

Matt Dufty has eight tries in his past seven games at this ground and is in rare try-scoring air. The flying fullback is in the best form of his career and if it wasn’t for the likes of Ryan Papenhuzen and James Tedesco could be in the frame for a NSW Origin jumper. He is the man always looming up in support for the Dragons. This is paying $8.25 but be warned! He needs to score exactly two tries to win this wager at TopSport … three-plus tries is paying $22!

St George Illawarra Dragons v NZ Warriors prediction 18-4-2021

We are enjoying watch the Dragons’ revival under much maligned coach Anthony Griffin. They are a pleasing side to watch and we just hope their early form is not a flash in the pan. Likewise the Warriors are a dynamic side with plenty of talent, so this should be a free-scoring affair. We are not 100pc confident about a Dragons win but the fact they are at home has swayed our thinking Our Dragons v Warriors prediction: Dragons by 6 points.
