NRL Thursday: Eels v Rabbitohs betting tips, prediction & odds, round 16, 2020

NRL round 13: Dragons v Broncos

Welcome to our Parramatta v South Sydney match preview, prediction and odds update for their NRL clash at Bankwest Stadium on Thursday, August 27.

Once again the Thursday night NRL match looms as the best match of the round, with so much at stake here, especially for the Wayne Bennett-coached Souths.

The Eels have enough wins in the bank to have a firm grip on a top-four spot; if the Rabbitohs can win, they remain in the mix for a lofty spot, but given they still have to play the Storm and Roosters in the last four rounds, a loss could put their finals spot in jeopardy.

The Bunnies are on a four-game winning streak but it’s a little flattering given their victims have all been outside the top eight: St George Illawarra, Brisbane, North Queensland and Manly.

Parramatta have won four of their past five games with their lone loss against St George Illawarra two weeks ago.

But one thing that has been notable of late is that the Eels have struggled in attack, averaging only 14 points per game for the past four games.

In the most recent meeting between these teams, the Eels won 26-14 in May last year.

Parramatta have the healthiest playing roster in the NRL, though second-rower Marata Niukore will miss the clash with the Bunnies through suspension for a crusher tackle.

Souths have more than their fair share of injury worries, with the latest being try-scoring wizard Alex Johnston, who suffered a head knock against Manly and is in doubt for this game. Queensland Origin star Dane Gagai could return from a hamstring injury in his place.

Below our NRL betting expert has highlighted his free Parramatta v Souths betting tips.

Parramatta to win/match total under 37.5 points

This double is paying around $2.85 with Unibet. Souths are a dazzling attacking team but lose something significant without Johnston there. Also, it’s hard not to be impressed with the way Parramatta have stepped up the defence even as their attack has misfired. Exhibit A: the 14-0 win against the admittedly under-strength Storm last week.

Blake Ferguson anytime try-scorer

The powerful Eels winger is enduring the longest try drought of his career, but he has been oh so close to ending that in recent weeks. The fact he is so hungry for a four-pointer makes us keen to take advantage. The markets had not been released at the time of writing but should be around $3.

Parramatta Eels v South Sydney Rabbitohs prediction

This promises to be an exciting contest. Before the season started we were keen on the NRL title chances of the Rabbitohs but things have not worked out for them so far injury-wise. Also, their forward pack has not matched those of the major contenders. We fear that will happen again. The Eels pack is one of the best in the league and also the most aggressive with its ball-play, dishing out by far the most offloads. They also have a big, fast set of backs, steered around by seriously clever footballers in Mitchell Moses and Clint Gutherson. We think the Eels will be a little too powerful on their home turf. Our Eels v Rabbitohs prediction: Eels by eight points.
