NRL Thursday: Panthers v Rabbitohs, predictions & odds, round 7, 2020

NRL round 13: Dragons v Broncos

The blockbuster clash between Penrith and South Sydney to start NRL round seven has been switched from Campbelltown Stadium to Netstrata Jubilee Oval because of concerns over the Campbelltown surface.

NRL head of football Graham Annesley said: “Campbelltown Stadium has had an extremely heavy workload over the last month, with some games played in wet conditions.”

The match is a nominal Panthers home game but the move should make little difference to the preparations of each team for what is arguably the match of the round.

Penrith are sitting in third place on the NRL table after their impressive 21-14 win over the powerful Melbourne Storm last round.

They look a lot more complete with Dylan Edwards back at fullback and have kept the same line-up as last week for this clash.

Meanwhile, Souths have had a couple of big wins over lesser lights the Warriors and the Titans the past two rounds to move into eighth place at three wins and three losses.

But the encouraging thing for coach Wayne Bennett is they have looked dynamic in attack with Cody Walker back at five-eighth. This week James “the Jet” Roberts is back on the bench ready to fight for a place in an explosive back line.

If the two meetings between these teams last season are anything to go back this should be a great contest. The Bunnies won the first meeting 22-18 with the Panthers winning the second match-up 19-18 thanks to a James Maloney field goal.

Panthers v Rabbitohs free betting tips

Below our NRL betting expert has highlighted his free tips for the Knights v Broncos clash.

Souths +2.5/match total over 36.5 double

The Rabbits have not done too much wrong since the NRL resumed and have clicked into gear the past couple of weeks. Love the look of their back line now and think they will score their share of tries, especially with Latrell Mitchell finding his feet at fullback.

Damien Cook to score a try

We love watching the Souths’ hooker play, with his powerful running through the ruck. He is probably the player helped most by the new six-again rules which have sped up the game. He is always such a threat.

Penrith Panthers v South Sydney Rabbitohs prediction

This should be a match to savour even if it does not pan out as expected. We have been staunch in our belief the Panthers are challengers this season, but we also believe the Rabbits are about to announce themselves as serious players. Any team with a spine of Latrell Mitchell, Adam Reynolds, Cody Walker and Damien Cook will prove a handful. If the Bunnies’ bog boppers can hold their own against the powerful Penrith pack, we think Souths can win a thriller by four points. Good punting.
