St Kilda v Hawthorn betting tips, prediction and odds; AFL rd 16 preview

Welcome to our St Kilda v Hawthorn betting tips, prediction and odds update ahead of their AFL round 16 clash at Metricon Stadium on Sunday.

The Saints must win if they are to stay in the hunt for an unlikely top-four position, while the once-mighty Hawks have slumped to 16th on the ladder and appear set for a rebuild.

St Kilda have been installed a $1.25 favourites for the clash and the Hawks are a $4 outsider. The $1.90 line has been set at 20.5 points, which is definitely a betting market that should be considered on this clash.

Making the Hawks’ task even harder, is the fact they have had three days less rest than their opponent, after last playing on Tuesday, when they were stunned by the previously winless Adelaide. The Saints are coming off a bye and last played on Saturday, August 29.

Hawthorn lead 3-2 in their past five clashes against St Kilda, dating back to 2016, but the Saints won their most recent encounter by five points at Marvel Stadium last year.

The Saints have ruled out Tim Membrey who underwent surgery on a finger injury on Monday, while Nick Hind has been dropped. Jack Lonie and Jon Marsh have been recalled, but Dan Hannebery and Jade Gresham are still some weeks off, despite starting their quarantine period in Queensland.

The Hawks have made seven changes as they look to inject fresh legs, with Ben McEvoy (managed), Ben Stratton (injured), Conor Glass (omitted), Darren Minchington (omitted), Jarman Impey (injured), Oliver Hanrahan (managed) and Shaun Burgoyne (managed) all out of the line-up.

They have included rested trio Will Day, Liam Shiels and Sam Frost. Damon Greaves, Dylan Moore, Harry Morrison and Josh Morris round out the inclusions.

St Kilda v Hawthorn tips

Our AFL betting expert has scoured the odds and found several value Saints v Hawks tips for Sunday’s game.

Hawthorn to lead at half-time and St Kilda to win

This option is paying $6.40 with Unibet and looks to be some good value. The Hawks will be hurting after the shocking capitulation to the Crows and we expect a team coached by Alastair Clarkson to react strongly. But the facts speak for themselves here; the Saints are presently a better team with a far stronger forward-line, even without Membrey, and they have had significantly more rest and should overrun their opponent in the second half.

Bradley Hill to get 20+ touches

Saints wingman Bradley Hill was brilliant in the Saints’ loss to Melbourne last start, gathering 27 possessions and giving his team plenty of drive in a low-scoring slog. The Saints want their silky runner to get as many touches as possible and he’s offering some nice value to continue his form and gather over 20 touches here, with it paying $2.10. Over 25 touches is paying $5.

St Kilda Saints v Hawthorn Hwks prediction 6/9/2020

We think Hawthorn will put up a better display than they did against Adelaide — they still have too many stars not to show more fight. But ultimately the Saints have a more talented forward line and the Hawks are finding it hard to find an avenue to goal. The Saints’ double-pronged ruck attack is magnificent with both Rowan Marshall and Paddy Ryder competent forwards as well as strong ruckmen and with Ben McEvoy’s absence, how well Hawk Jon Ceglar contributes in this contest could play a big role in deciding how competitive his team is. Our final St Kilda v Hawthorn prediction? Saints by 23 points.
