West Coast v Collingwood betting tips & prediction; AFL Rd 8 preview

AFL round 12 odds 2021 - covid fixture update

AFL heavyweights West Coast and Collingwood will do battle at Optus Stadium on Sunday, with the home team the hot favourite to notch up their fifth win of the season. Welcome to our West Coast v Collingwood betting tips for their AFL round 8 clash.

West Coast have won three successive matches — against Sydney, Adelaide and Fremantle — to sit on the cusp of the top eight after a slow start to the year, but the Magpies will prove a much sterner test than their previous wins.

The Eagles have struggled through the midfield this year, despite the acquisition of Tim Kelly, with the former Geelong star only just beginning to show his talent in the west. Their forward line has also been somewhat misfiring, with veteran forward Josh Kennedy and exciting small Liam Ryan down on previous years outputs.

The Magpies have suffered a huge blow with star forward Jordan De Goey ruled out for up to 10 weeks with a broken finger, only days after he kicked five goals in the Magpies’ big win over Geelong. Despite this the Magpies are sitting fourth on the ladder, and will be confident of causing an upset.

AFL betting sites have installed the Eagles around the $1.65 mark, while the Magpies’ odds have been set at $2.25. The line for the Eagles vs Magpies clash has been set at 5.5, which is not tempting to our tastes.

The Eagles have made just the one change to their team, with Luke Shuey recalled for the injured Brendon Ah Chee, although Ryan may miss the clash with personal issues, with the club indicating he had a link to a fatal car accident, where an eight-year-old boy died on his way to school.

The Magpies have been forced into making changes with the injury to De Goey compounded by a Travis Varcoe injury, while exciting young forward Atu Bosenavulagi has been omitted. Darcy Cameron has been selected to play ahead of American Mason Cox, while Josh Thomas returns after being dropped earlier this year and Matthew Scharenberg returns from injury.

West Coast Eagles v Collingwood Magpies tips

Our AFL betting analyst has scoured the betting and found several value Eagles v Magpies tips for Sunday’s game.

Jaidyn Stephenson to kick 3+ goals

The Magpies’ Rising Star winner Jaidyn Stephenson has played further up the field in the last fortnight, but with the injury to De Goey and Steele Sidebottom’s continued absence through suspension, we think he will spend most of the night inside the forward 50. Look to Stephenson and Jamie Elliott to kick multiple goals for the Magpies. Stephenson is paying a juicy $8.50 to kick three or more goals.

Andrew Gaff to get 30+ touches

West Coast star Andrew Gaff is paying $3.30 to get over 30 possessions, which we think is a good bet in this clash, with the Magpies likely to let him roam free, if their own ball magnet Adam Treloar is afforded the same luxury. While West Coast’s midfield numbers have been down a little bit this year, maybe because of Tim Kelly taking some of the minutes, we think Gaff is primed for a big performance here. Pies fans can probably bank the $2 on offer for Treloar to gather 30 possessions.

West Coast v Collingwood prediction 26/7/20

West Coast and Collingwood have a strong rivalry in modern times, with the Eagles beating the Magpies in the 2018 grand final. While you would think it was a lock that the Eagles would repeat the dose at home, the Magpies are one of the best traveling teams in the AFL, and always seem to grow an extra leg when on the road. This is proven by their gutsy one-point win over the Eagles at this ground in round 17 last year. While we won’t be betting on the head to head result in this one, we think the Eagles should be too good with De Goey, Sidebottom and Jeremy Howe absent. Our final West Coast v Collingwood prediction? Eagles by 10 points.
